About Emily ...
Who am I?
"My personality type matches are influencer, investigator and quality controller. These fit my job perfectly! I represent Research & Development in the production meeting (where decisions are made on issues concerning production). It's my job to influence the best decisions for the company. Another area of my role is to look into current trends, customer demands and research for new future products which suits the investigator. Finally, my role involves writing and keeping up to date all the build instructions of the products we make, to ensure quality and consistency just like a quality controller. "
What do I do?
"Staring salary for my role was £22,000. I most enjoy the diversity of my work. Every day is different and I can focus my work where I am passionate and work on learn more about my areas of interest. It's also good to have such a good general knowledge of everything that goes on in the business so my decisions are made with a full overview. "
How did I get here?
"I've always been interested in making and designing. I studied Resistant Materials for GCSE and then progressed this to A-level product design and a degree of product design. I was inspired to peruse this path as my dad is an engineer but also, and more importantly, I enjoyed it and I was good at it. Often doing better than the boys in the class. The class only had me and one other girl in it and this spurred me on to prove girls can do it too!As I have gone through various deign roles, I have realised I am more and more interested in how the business works and why and how design/product decisions are made how they are. I am now working towards becoming a product manager, who's role it is to influence those decisions and really understand the market and our customers to make better and more informed design decisions. "
The life I live
"I am a mum of a 3 year old! I had my son a year after graduating so I had a year's maternity leave. I found it difficult to be putting my career on hold when it had only just begun! But I managed to show my passion for engineering and design and get back into it starting from a level where I left of. I also have an allotment full of all types of fruit and veg which I grow from seed. "
My typical day
"Every day is different but I do spend a good amount of time reading and sending emails and attending meetings. This is because decisions are collaborative and require multiple peoples input. I have also learnt it is very important to communicate!!"
My qualifications
"A-levels in Physics, maths, art and product designBSc Product Design"
