About Devon...

Who am I?

"Being a Quality Controller and Investigator are very important in my job, and so it really helps to have these personality traits. It helps you to find and remove any 'bugs' (or errors) in your software programmes, so that when you are finished, you can be confident that the computer code does exactly what your team needs it to do, and that everyone can rely on it."

What do I do?

"The main part of my job is writing computer code to build software programmes that collect, store, and prepare data that is fed into mathematical models that can make use it to make predictions. I will usually work in a team of 5 - 10 people, and we work together to come up with the best design for the programme, to agree on the best data to use, and how to ensure that the code that gets written is highly reliable and safe. The parts of my job that I most enjoy are when I come up against technical ideas that are new to me, or tricky code challenges where I need to use my problem-solving skills, and work closely with my teammates, to come up with good solutions. I get to learn new things everyday by solving problems."

How did I get here?

"The things I studied in school are not directly related to the job I do now - I didn't discover that I liked technology until I had left school, college, and university, and had started working. I studied Business, Psychology, and English Literature at A Level, and did a degree in Anthropology (the study of humanity), and a master's degree in national security. Once I had started working, I became interested in technology, and spent some of my spare time learning how to write computer code, by using online courses and speaking to people I knew who worked as Software Engineers."

The life I live

"My favourite thing to do is to ride horses - I am obsessed! I once spent 6 months working as a Cowgirl in the outback of Australia, just so I could ride around on a horse all day wearing a cool cowboy hat."

My typical day

"My work days are a mixture of meetings with my team, and time spent at my computer, either alone or with a teammate, writing code to build a piece of software. It can take time to build complex programmes, so often I will be working on the same project for a few months at a time, taking it from an idea, to a working programme that positively impacts the customers of the bank."

My qualifications

"I took GCSEs in Statistics, Mathematics, Double Science, English Literature, IT, Environmental Science, French, Economics, and Business Studies. Then, I went on to college to do A Levels, before going to university. After studying, I joined the graduate scheme at my current company."
