Nukey Proctor

Senior Consultant at Methods Ltd

I think you've got to be able to focus less on the voice inside you saying why you can't do something and more on the voice saying 'why not?' You need to be okay with being a bit uncomfortable, because with time, patience and hard work, it won't take long before everyone starts to look for your input and to get you involved. You also need to be yourself. It's much less effort than trying to be what you think leadership looks/acts like and means you can just focus on doing the best possible job!

About Nukey...

Who am I?

"My personality types Coach, Influencer and Campaigner have some similarities in that they require thinking, problem-solving and good communication skills. These are all important skills for a Project Manager in the IT industry. I also need to work well with people, as all projects rely on a team and that's also reflected in my types. "

What do I do?

"I am Senior Consultant in the Projects and Programme Management space, which means I have to create, coordinate, direct and deliver projects. I work with people and am able to take in information, digest it and make the best decisions on the basis of the detail I've got. As I work with a wide range of people at many levels, I need to be able to communicate really well and tailor how I speak to my audience. I also need to be incredibly organised and pay attention to detail to make sure that we're in the best possible position to deliver our projects. As I work mainly on public sector projects, I also need to be incredibly efficient. In my job, being able to deliver quickly is definitely a priority. I work with a number of IT applications to help me plan and deliver my work and so also need to be able to pick up new tools fast. I really enjoy working with smart, motivated people who work hard and have great ideas. Typically, I have to be quite goal-orientated to work in the industry I'm in and care about getting things done well. I enjoy the challenge of solving problems and overcoming hurdles, you have to anticipate that projects may not go to plan! I like working with the public sector and seeing how IT and technology supports everyday tasks without people realising it. I also like learning and there's always something new to learn and find out more about. Finally and most importantly, I like the autonomy of being given a goal and not told how to achieve it. Having the freedom to decide how I think things could be done is very important to me. Recently my area (Project Management) have developed a royally chartered career path to see what this progression might look like."

How did I get here?

"It's a bit clichéd but my Mum is a massive inspiration for me as she's really hard-working and driven. She also showed me how important it was to have a good education and to be ambitious. Growing up, I really admired Sir Alex Ferguson and took inspiration from his tireless work ethic, passion for success and ability to motivate his teams. As an adult, I look up immensely to Beyonce and Michelle Obama, who as black women, have worked hard to be the best in their respective careers despite the barriers they may have faced. Finally, a recent role model I’ve been inspired by is Daniel Ek, who founded Spotify. He is a great example of someone who didn’t just follow a stereotypical career path but hasn’t let that stop him from being immensely successful. He lets his passion and interests drive his career decisions and it’s an attitude that I think is really important. "

The life I live

"I enjoy writing fiction and poetry, playing computer games, watching great television and movies. I also like going to gigs and seeing live music."

My typical day

"It typically involves reviewing my project plans, engaging with my team to get updates and help decision making, understand what needs to happen next and delegate work. I also need to be ready to react to any issues or problems we hadn't foreseen."

My qualifications

"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A Level Biology, Psychology, English Literature AS Level Chemistry Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) BSc.
