About Cindy...

Who am I?

"As part of my work I need to look at different data sets and understand how my team can use it to help understand and help our customers. By doing this, I need to be detailed, curious about my findings, ensure I'm fair and be able to explain my work to others. These are all the traits you'd find in an influencer and quality controller. I also work as part of a team, sometimes with more junior colleagues which is where the personality traits of a coach are useful, particularly being able to listen."

What do I do?

"My work involves working with different members of a team to understand and develop work which will help the company grow and help our customers. I work both individually and with others to find and understand the data we have. I then would use coding languages and different software to make the data useful for data scientists to build models for the rest of the business. The top 3 things I enjoy are:- Being able to use the skills I learnt in university.- Being able to work, interact and share knowledge with other people.- Being able to make a difference to the company and the customers that we serve."

How did I get here?

"I studied Mathematics in university as it had always been a subject that I enjoyed. However it was in these four years that the field of mathematics broadened and I discovered machine learning and coding, learning Python and C. Before this I thought coding wasn't for me as few girls in my school were interested in computing and I'd never been exposed to it at home.During university I completed two summer internships with Lloyds as I'd recognised I wanted to be part of the future that was digital banking. Here I learned how much variety there was in a career in finance and discovered data science. After university I joined the graduate scheme where I worked in different roles from product manager, data analyst and finally finding myself in my current team. Here I am in a position as a data engineer to combine all the things that I enjoy: working with data, coding and learning about the new technologies that are transforming the industry and our lives."

The life I live

"In my spare time I enjoy doing Yoga and Zumba. I find it very relaxing to stretch and meditate in my yoga classes and then I let loose and dance to the music in Zumba.I also love being part of the Toastmasters community where I am developing my public speaking and communication skills. "

My typical day

"My typical day starts with checking and responding to emails. This is then followed by a short meeting called a stand-up where the team update each other on what they've been working on and what they'll be looking at next. I spend the majority of my day either at my laptop coding, doing some analysis or working with the data scientists and product owners to work out more details about the project. Ultimately the code I write and the knowledge that I gain about the data we use will enable data scientists to build models which can make predictions to help the business and our customers.I also get some time during the week to work on other projects such as continually making the team a great place to work in. I spend a few hours a week working on my development and learning new things."

My qualifications

"Post GCSE, I achieved an A-level in Mathematics, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry. At university I received an integrated masters in Mathematics after 4 years of studying. I then started the graduate scheme at Lloyds Banking Group which involved three 8 month placements working in different teams. In one of these I completed a 10 week Data Science course which developed my Python knowledge further. In my current team I have worked on different projects, using different coding languages which I learnt on the job. The learning continues as I look to develop my skills even further."
