Who am I?

"The results from the MSML quiz shows that I am a Coach, Influencer and Manager. I think this matches with my personality very well. I believe that I am understanding and creative in and outside of work. I am very approachable and friendly and have been told I always have a smile on my face which is why the coach personality suits me very well.I can work well in a team and independently which is a good skill to have and I always pay attention to detail. I have always been good at finding and reviewing information which I believe is one of the many key trait in engineers. Therefore, I believe the influencer trait fits my personality and makes a good engineer. One day I would like to see myself in a managerial role so being matched with this personality type is very reassuring. I take pride in my organisation and I am always open-minded and motivated to do well in my job and outside of work."

What do I do?

"Throughout my apprenticeship scheme I have had various roles and responsibilities all which have developed me in their own ways. I have been able to gain a wide understanding of various departments at MBDA which includes:•\tCustomer Support Services,•\tManufacturing,•\tIndustrial Policy, Global Supply Chain & Procurement,•\tMechanical Analysis,•\tMechanical Design,•\tMechanical Future Concepts.I finished my apprenticeship in September 2019 and I am a Mechanical Design Engineer. The jobs I do vary regularly and I thoroughly enjoy doing something different every day and like to be kept on my toes. My job as a design engineer is to provide production and in service design support. A few of my responsibilities include: •\tProviding design support in tests and trials,•\tResearching the recyclability of certain materials,•\tReviewing and analysing technical documents,•\tProving compliancy of certain assemblies.I am proud to work in the defence industry as I know the work that I am doing is highly regarded. "

How did I get here?

"I wanted to go to university to follow the “right” path. I was always told by teachers, family and friends that I had to “go to uni, get a degree and find a job” in order to succeed in life. So that was always the plan. After completing my GCSE’s in 2013, I enrolled at Oaklands College and started a BTEC in Engineering with the hopes of going to university after completion. As a child, I always knew I wanted to be an engineer which is why I chose the subject. After completing my BTEC I attended various university open days, and applied to all my favourite universities as I was determined to go because that was supposedly the key to success. However, in the final decision stages my college encouraged me to look at other options such as an apprenticeship route. I didn’t really know what an apprenticeship was and what it would entail, so I did what anyone in my generation would do, and that was to Google it. An apprenticeship combined education with industry experience, and so I could apply theory into a real working environment. This instantaneously seemed like the best option for me as I would be gaining a recognised qualification as well as the added bonus of earning a salary. I then applied for the engineering apprenticeship at MBDA and was successful! I immediately cancelled all my university plans and accepted their offer."

The life I live

"At home, I’m a support carer for three girls with learning difficulties. So alongside my job, I have been working towards my care certificate. This involves doing online courses and attending bi-monthly meetings to discuss my progress. Being a support carer involves spending a lot of time at home where I teach the girls day to day tasks so that they can learn to become more independent. Being a support carer has taught me invaluable skills which has aided my development in and out of the workplace. In 2019 I took part in the “One Million Steps Challenge” to raise money for Diabetes UK. This challenge involves walking one million steps from the 1 July to 30 September to raise money for those with diabetes, which is a close charity of mine. The money raised from the challenge will pay for scientists to make the next big breakthrough and make a life-changing campaign a reality. I was able to raise awareness and share my story on BBC Three Counties Radio. Every year I ensure to take part in a minimum of two charity events which is what I enjoy doing the most as helping others and raising money for a good cause makes me very happy. Outside of working hours, I am part of the MBDA Charity Challenge committee raising money for multiple charities. Since joining, I’ve helped run and co-organise two Charity Balls. Last year, we raised £1133.86 for Hertfordshire Action on Disability which was the most amount ever raised for the Charity Ball making it a huge success. I also took part in the Three Peaks Challenge, which is a big achievement of mine. The Three Peaks was mentally and physically challenging but I was able to successfully complete it in a time of 24 hours and 21 minutes which was amazing. "

My typical day

"Typically a day at work consists of being on my computer using Creo which is a Computer-Aided Design software. I use Creo to look into different assemblies/parts and I am able to think of new ways of how we could potentially improve existing equipment. I also spend time providing design support by writing and responding to emails. I frequently travel to Bolton which is where our manufacturing site is to offer design support to our manufacturing engineers. I have various work packages which I have sole responsibility for and I ensure to balance my time wisely so that I can contribute work to each of these packages to meet deadlines. "

My qualifications

"For the first two year of my apprenticeship I was enrolled onto a HNC Diploma in Mechanical Engineering course where I achieved a Distinction. My third year of my apprenticeship I was enrolled onto a HND Diploma in Mechanical Engineering course achieving a Distinction. Whilst completing my HNC and HND I was also enrolled onto the EAL Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Technical Support which I completed and passed. I am now enrolled at the Open University where I am working towards a Bachelors in Engineering which I am doing part time at home. "
