Systems Engineer at Reaction Engines

There's no such thing as a stupid question!

About Stephanie...

Who am I?

"I would describe myself as logical, thoughtful and more practical than I am creative. I'm happy working on my own or with a small team. I am quite curious and enjoy getting to the heart of a difficult problem and finding a practical way to solve it. I think this matches quite well with the Developer / Explorer / Investigator combo!"

What do I do?

"Systems Engineering is about being able to look at the big picture. On the project I'm working on, as a Systems Engineer - I have to be able to understand the different components that make up our system, and ensure they work together functionally and that they fit together mechanically to ensure we get a complete system that works as expected. Whilst I don't need to be an expert it every component, I have to understand enough to be able to work with the engineers designing the different components to ensure we all understand each others requirements. "

How did I get here?

"From a young age, I was travelling on aeroplanes to visit family in Northern Ireland, I always wanted to sit next to the window to see the mechanics of the wing at work, and I was fascinated by everything about flying. As a teenager I was lucky enough to visit NASA's Johnson Space Centre in Houston, and I found it really interesting. When it came to choosing what I wanted to study at university, I wasn't sure. I knew I enjoyed the problem solving aspects of Maths and Physics, but it wasn't until I read about Aerospace Engineering that I realised I could do 'real' problem solving in an industry that had always interested me."

The life I live

"Outside of work, I enjoy running, swimming and cycling. During my holidays I enjoy travelling and exploring new places."

My typical day

"A typical day at work involves working in small groups or one-to-ones to work through problems with the right people. It's a good thing I enjoy working collaboratively!"

My qualifications

"At A Level I took Maths (A), Physics (B) and Geography (B), before going to the University of Southampton to study for a Master of Engineering (MEng) in Aeronautics and Astronautics."
