About Katelyn...
Who am I?
"Developer - I need to have a strong understanding of the manufacturing process at site to understand how all the equipment works to ensure we safely make flour. In my job I often work by myself, but lead a team of people.Quality Controller - Engineering is a high risk activity so I have to ensure everyone is trained and capable to carry out their jobs. The site is complex and old so there are many things with problems that all need to be remembered. As a senior manager at the site I sometimes get involved with investigating people who have done something wrong, and this requires me to be fair and trustworthy.Trainer - I have to translate the detail from the engineers upwards to my manager in order to get extra money or time to resolve ongoing problems. I also try and publicise the great work the team have done to ensure the factory keeps running. There is a lot to do every day so being organised and efficient with my time is a must."
What do I do?
"I oversee all engineering activities at my site. We mill flour from wheat and then pack that flour into bags you can buy at the supermarket. I lead a team of 9 people to ensure the mill keeps working by planning time and budgeting for replacement parts and problem solving when pieces of equipment unexpectedly break down.I enjoy the variety - no two days are ever the same. The starting salary for the graduate scheme I joined after university is currently around £30,000."
How did I get here?
"I worked at Allied Bakeries for 3 years with Shift Engineers for 6 months, then as a Project Engineer, then as a Maintenance Planner. I then spent 12 months working as a Shift Manager overseeing production. I currently work as Engineering Manager at a flour mill.Whilst studying for my A levels I worked in a petrol station, and at university I did lots of jobs including administration and giving tours of the university."
The life I live
"I really enjoy motor racing like Formula One and MotoGP and I volunteer at Silverstone for the big events. I also enjoy researching my family history and doing cross stitch on an evening to unwind.Travelling is also a big passion of mine - this year I'm going to Machu Picchu. In 2016 I went to the Indianapolis 500 by myself for the 100th race which is something I'd been dreaming of for years. My motto for that trip was 'Work Hard, Dream Big'."
My typical day
"Each day varies, but I always get to work for 8am. I then check emails to see how production ran overnight (we're 24/7). The first meeting is 9am where I meet with production, food safety and health and safety to discuss how production is currently running and any major issues - we have similar meetings at 12 and 4pm. Throughout the day I might be having conversations with my team about their training and development, or meeting with suppliers and writing proposals for new pieces of equipment. Sometimes I plan my day but a major equipment failure means I have to stop what I'm doing and work with my team to fix the equipment and get the line back up and running.I try and leave at 5pm and go home for some food and a rest!"
My qualifications
"A Levels: Maths, Physics, Geography and Further MathsUniversity: MEng Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University (with a Placement Year working at Xerox)Graduate Scheme: Associated British Foods Plc (ABF) - Engineering Graduate Scheme. "
