About Emily...
Who am I?
"I think the types match my personality well. In my role I look for areas for development, where we can improve efficiency or make life easier for the employees here which links to the innovator. I am definitely time orientated, motivated and well organised which is the managerial qualities. This has been shown by completing a part time masters degree over three years along side working full time. I often communicate through people so if someone if talking very technically about the engineering solution but the listener doesn't understand, I will translate and communicate the major facts they need to complete their role. This was seen when I was completing bids and the technical solution was being communicated but in too much depth and the planners and project managers nearly fell asleep listening to the in depth information about cable tracks and connections. "
What do I do?
"I am a Verification and Validation Management Lead Engineer for the UK mainline railway. I make sure that everything Network Rail request for upgrading our railways is done and fit for the public to use.Currently we are trying to upgrade the current system into a more 'sat nav' style system where each driver in the cab will have his/her own screen which will tell him how fast to go and where to stop at. This will improve the amount of trains on the network, increasing the amount of people we can transport. I enjoy making a difference and being able to implement improvement projects on projects that can bring massive benefits to whole cities. "
How did I get here?
"I didn't know what I wanted to do and fell into engineering because my Uncle was high up in an engineering firm. I studied Chemical Engineering at Heriot Watt University as it was the engineering field with most girls in. When I graduated I wanted to build power plants but the oil and gas price crash happened and jobs were scarce. I got an interview with Alstom and was offered a job. I never thought of the railway as a career but the opportunities are immense within the Rail sector. "
The life I live
"In my spare time I play the trumpet in a brass band and play netball for a local team. I go to the gym, bake, visit friends and love to travel. "
My typical day
"My days are very different depending on what projects I'm working on. Most days I come in, make a cup of tea and check my emails which will give me some indication as to things I need to address urgently. Regular tasks include:Writing specifications for national use,Helping project teams with their V&V activities, Attending team briefs and technical briefs to be updated on company and railway events Reading company standards, updates and policies."
My qualifications
"After school I went to Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form and achieved: Business Studies- AMaths- BChemistry- CExtended Subject- 'Will renewable energy overtake fossil fuels by 2020'- AI then went onto university and achieved my masters in Chemical Engineering with EnergyAs part of my Graduate scheme Alstom put me through a masters in Professional Development with Business Management which i have just recently achieved.
