"I plan and manage large drill programmes to investigate the ground prior to construction works, such as housing developments. Each drill hole is a slice through the sub-surface and gives me information to allow me to generate models so I know how to progress the development. We work in areas where coal has been historically mined, often leaving large voids in the ground, so it is vital I know exactly what is happening underground. I enjoy being involved with lots of different projects at once, meeting clients/contractors and I have a good mix of office and site work. There is not much opportunity to progress here as it is quite a small team."

"For A Levels, I took English Language, Geography, Biology, Chemistry! I was the first person in my family to go to university: I had never even heard of Geology or a job as a Geologist until I started applying for courses! Lecturers at University inspired me."

"I will set out the drill programme on a computer using AutoCAD software, then travel to site and set it out using GPS equipment and flags. I will speak to the drillers and tell them what the programme involves, how deep the holes have to be etc. I will then travel to other sites, collecting drill logs, which is the information collected, and ensure health and safety is being adhered to. Back at the office, I will input the drill logs on to the computer and generate 'as built' models and cross sections, painting a 'piece by piece' picture of what is actually happening on sub-surface of the build."
