Elizabeth Beevor
Product Manager, Online Security at TalkTalk
Subject choice isn't hugely relevant here, although studying subjects like business, accounting, computer science, can help. The key is to get involved in projects that involve thinking about what customers want and need, maybe even take part in hackathons in your spare time where you don't necessarily need coding experience.
About Elizabeth...
Who am I?
"I work efficiently and my Campaigner trait helps with the role as it requires a lot of prioritisation in terms of time and projects. I think the Communicator and Coach aspects of my personality enable me to understand customer needs and frustrations. I also think being both supportive and persuasive enables me to put across my ideas and present them to the business."
What do I do?
"I manage all aspects of our customer security products to make sure they are successful in fulfilling a customer need. My role involves making sure everything we do has a solid business case, has a design that delights customers and that customers are aware of the products we have. It’s great being able to launch new products and celebrate their success and watch them grow and benefit the business. In terms of opportunity to progress, there are a range of levels from Junior Product Manager all the way to Head of Product. The variety of experience you get, especially around business cases, can stand you in good stead for more senior roles potentially at Executive level. I get to travel and so far my career has taken me to the US, South Africa and other European countries. The reason for travel ranges from conferences, to market research, to visiting colleagues/vendors, to conducting training on our products for our offshore call centres."
How did I get here?
"I began in an editorial team at a scientific/medical publishing house and was able to get involved in a lot of digital projects as the company was very small and didn't have a dedicated product team. My experience led me to move into Product Management for another publisher and ultimately to where I am now in technology. I knew quite early on that I wanted to move into Product Management in order to build a career with variety, challenge, no two days the same and with good opportunities for progression. I love being able to mix the business element with a huge focus on customer experience and bridge the two. My first manager was the person who first told me about Product Management and suggested that I might be a good fit for that sort of role. I've also been inspired by Susan Cain, an influential figure and author of the book \"Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking\" which inspired me to embrace all aspects of my personality to get where I wanted to be and not to think that introverts are somehow limited in our potential."
The life I live
"I love cooking, foraging, running/cycling/yoga, being outdoors, travelling, listening to and performing folk/acoustic music and I love painting and crafts too!"
My typical day
"I communicate with a lot of different people from marketing, technology, security, finance, and more. It's about bringing people together to build something exciting. Sometimes it's working with marketing on a new campaign, sometimes it's looking at new products we can introduce and whether they will make money or delight customers. It could be working on the actual design and user experience of the product and other times it's doing customer research. A lot of time is spent problem solving either working on a new idea, or when something hasn't gone to plan or needs fixing, working together with others to get things back on track. I like the variety: there's never a dull moment and we are always thinking about the future. There's something really exciting about always thinking of what new product or feature you could introduce, or ways that you can grow the business, or improve the customer experience. It makes all the challenges worthwhile because you can see the opportunity that everything is aiming towards."
