About Claire...

Who am I?

"I am interested in learning so my Explorer trait fits. I enjoy collaborating to make the end product better for everyone, which sounds like my Influencer and Investigator traits. Best of all, I can help and make a difference in my business."

What do I do?

"I work for a government funded organisation responsible for the environmental remediation of aging nuclear facilities. My role is responsible for scanning the outside business world and government policy and assessing impacts to how we deliver our work. We have a £2Billion annual budget and I look to the future to recommend how we spend the money in future years. This puts me at the heart of strategic decision making and responsible for making sure we communicate clearly to our Executive before they take decisions. I am curious about the outside world and how I can learn from others. This role has given me the chance to collaborate with Highways England to partner on how we can build stronger programme capability and learn from each other. I applied for the role of Chief Nuclear Intelligence Officer and had an interview. So fingers crossed. That would require me to work more closely with our Board and the external government regulator."

How did I get here?

"Lots of people inspired me. One who I still keep in touch with is Dame Sue Ion and she was a marvellous mentor. A research scientist passionate about helping women in science and nuclear. Prior to my current job, I have been a Head of project management, delivered nuclear storage programmes, erected security fences on a nuclear site, commissioned a new anti cancer drug and carried out environmental remediation works."

The life I live

"I am learning to play the piano I like a new challenge to keep my brain active and currently that is it! I also exercise to keep my body healthy and I enjoy swimming and cycling. My family keep me active too and I have 3 young children."

My typical day

"My day starts before I hit the desk with a very early morning coffee and reading the FT to check if there is anything in the outside business world that might affect my business and the decisions we have to take. My day consists of lots of communicating. I have visits to my desk, phone calls and emails from people across the business who want help communicating the impact of their technical work. I run an executive committee which takes big strategy decisions and I write papers recommending or delivering insights from the outside world. I spend a lot of time with our corporate strategy team checking alignment and making sure our executive is well informed."
