Abigail Mountford
PhD Student at University of Bristol
You have to be determined and not give up when things are tough. There will always be times you think you aren't good enough or that it's too hard but if you just keep putting one foot in-front of the other eventually things come good. I think also keep your head down and work hard.
About Abigail...
Who am I?
"I have to be very self motivated and organised as there is no one telling me what to do, so Coordinator certainly fits in with that part of my job. Having a good sense of humour allows me to get on very well with my colleagues and collaborate with other scientists, so for this, my Coach trait is very useful."
What do I do?
"I work in a chemistry lab researching how to make a bacteria synthesise an antibiotic to treat MRSA more efficiently. I enjoy having the freedom to do what I want, decide my own goals and motivate myself. I really hope that I can get a good job after I finish doing my PhD. I would really like to work at the foreign office or in the civil service."
How did I get here?
"I'm not really sure. I went to a girls' school so never had the thought that I couldn't do something because I am a girl. I work in a very male dominated environment so I look up to other women who are in the same position I am in. I'm not sure I was inspired by anyone, I just took a path that I wanted to do."
The life I live
"I really enjoy going to the gym and recently have taken up yoga. I enjoy cooking delicious new recipes and life drawing. Also I love going for an oat milk latte!!"
My typical day
"Day to day I do experiments and read scientific papers. I also do teach undergraduates."
My qualifications
"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels)Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A Levels Maths A Chemistry A* Biology A AS Level German B Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) Post-graduate degree (MSc, MA, etc.) MSci in Chemistry with honours (first class) PhD in ChemistryDoctorate (PhD) PhD in Chemistry"
