Evie Skinner
Junior Software Engineer at Sparta Global
It doesn't matter what degree subject you do or projects you have completed as adaptability and a self-starting personality are what count. If you suspect someone's trying to dissuade you from doing something because you are a girl, they are obviously below you! So ignore their rubbish!
About Evie...
Who am I?
"As an Explorer, I'm the sort of person who likes to know how and why things work. The study of human languages is in many ways the study of how people and cultures work; so it's not much of a stretch to apply that to computer languages using my Coach and Trainer personality types. I am also very good at understanding how people are feeling, which is good as my job involves a great deal of teamwork."
What do I do?
"I help to build software applications, mostly to move data from one place to another, within a team of software engineers. I write code in the C# and SQL languages which becomes a computer application for people to use."
How did I get here?
"I saw the film 'Why Him?', in which the main character is a sickeningly wealthy mobile app entrepreneur with tropical animals in his garden. Mum and I decided to learn to code together! Going from having never written a line of code in my life, to getting my first role as a Junior Engineer in six months was quite an achievement. I haven’t travelled with work yet, but maybe in the future as software engineers are needed all over the world. There are also definitely opportunities for progression as there is a serious shortage of coders in the UK."
The life I live
"I love playing the drums, eating cheese, doing yoga and making websites for my friends."
My typical day
"First of all I check my emails, then the team have our daily Stand Up meeting, which is a chance to talk about any challenges we are facing individually and how to tackle them. I do coding tutorials or contribute to open source software for fun and to sharpen my skills. I write code either alone or alongside another coder in the team (pair programming). This is really helpful, especially if I'm struggling to write the code. I love the fact that I'm always learning. No-one is expected to know everything because the technologies we use are changing constantly! This makes me unafraid to jump in and learn on the job."
My qualifications
"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels)Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent)Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) Modern Languages - French and ArabicSome OU courses in mathematics and the sciences."
