Sorrel Peatfield
Operations Initiative Manager at TalkTalk Business
I would advise anyone who wanted to do what I do to take every opportunity that comes along and learn as much as possible. Even if it doesn't feel like your planned next step, it can often be valuable. I would advise you to work hard and be determined to achieve your goal. For a creative and autonomous role like mine, I would advise you to try and think outside the box and come up with new ways of thinking.
About Sorrel...
Who am I?
"Being an Influencer type means I am good at explaining complex information to non specialists, which is a key part of my role. I have an eye for detail when creating pieces of communication, which is typical of my Quality Controller type. I like to plan and ensure a bigger picture perspective is taken into account. I am very organised and always have multiple pieces of work and projects to deliver with tight deadlines, which is where my Manager trait is very useful."
What do I do?
"I am responsible for internal communication for 460 colleagues. I design and run communication campaigns and initiatives as well as organising events such as Leadership methods and employee engagement activities. I work closely with the Leadership team to ensure they have the information and reports they need. The most exciting part of my career to date was having a meeting with the Chief Operating Officer who asked me if I would take a new role that was being created just for me! Despite having a specialised role, I think that the skills I have gained are transferable to almost any role and therefore it gives me lots of opportunity to progress. My current role doesn’t require much travelling, however during my graduate scheme, I spent time in London and York."
How did I get here?
"I did a Business Management degree with a year work placement to gain some industry experience. After leaving university I applied for a Graduate scheme which allowed me to do three placements to understand where I would like to focus my career and was offered my current job at the end. My parents inspire me because they are so hardworking and determined. They both have really successful careers but also have started an amazing charity and dedicate so much time to making other people's lives better and have always remained humble. My manager also inspires me as she is a powerful woman with a strong identity and is well respected in the business. She also believes in me and makes me believe I can succeed."
The life I live
"I enjoy travelling and visiting new places. I support my family's charity with fundraisers and go to Kenya to support first hand when I can. I love spending time with my friends, going to the gym and reading."
My typical day
"No two days are the same. It completely depends on the projects taking place, the time in the financial year and my customer's needs. I spend some of my time with my customers understanding what good communication looks like to them as well as time with the Leadership team working on communication strategies. I also organise communication events for the Leadership to share their vision and strategy for the company and engagement activities to encourage employee motivation. I love the variety of the work I do and the wide network of people that I work with. It is very fast paced and exciting and is always changing so I am never doing the same thing for long."
