Surveyor at Murphy Surveys
You can do ANYTHING you set your mind to! I would highly recommend getting work experience, it is not only amazing to have on your CV, but also helps you decide if you actually want to work in this field of work. In your summer or Easter holiday, you can reach out to anyone and ask if you can shadow them for a week, it can also be a lot of fun to explore different types of industries.
About Lauren...
Who am I?
"As Murphy Surveys grow, so does the employees which means lots of excited new employees. I really enjoy sharing my knowledge with them and always go out my way to make worksheets for them after I have taught them something new. If I can help in anyway to train someone up I will, it is so important to share knowledge and we have all been in that position. I definitely feel I match up to innovator, I help run lots of social clubs and meetings within the company, coming up with new ideas for volunteering and the environment. This also helps with teamwork, I can use everyone ideas to come up with the best way of working out a situation or the most efficient way to complete a job. The campaigner personality type links quite a lot to the innovator, having lots of creative ideas and being good with words. But is very relevant to my recent attendance of events and meetings as I have to be organised and on time. "
What do I do?
"I work mainly on construction sites, where I make sure the surrounding buildings aren't being affected by any digging taking place. I then write reports of my findings and send it to the client. In my company you get to experience all types of surveys for example; I have had some really exciting jobs including a 3D laser scan for 3 months at Winston Churchill’s old war office building in London. I then got the opportunity to go down to Henry the 8th’s wine cellar which only a handful of people have visited as it's not open to the public (including all the U.S presidents). The favourite part of my job is the fact that I get to be in charge of the sites I go to and I am only a surveyor, it is nice to have that responsibility. Also every day is different and It is really nice to have a balance between office and outdoor work. "
How did I get here?
"My Geography teacher in secondary school has always told me I can do anything. So when I did some research into surveying I had no idea what it was, what did I have to do and my degree was not relevant. But remembered that I can do anything if i put my mind to it, and so I went for it and now love every day! In my fist week, I was surveying a road and another female came up to me (a plumber) and we had a chat about how good it is to see other women around. She was so strong and excited about her career and future. From that moment on it has motivated me to be more like her. I also met my now husband at work. He also is a surveyor and has always supported me and given advice when I needed it. He is so good at his job and does everything so perfectly I look up to him a lot.I studied Geography at university and wanted to do something that involved being outside but also making models (like playing on the Sims) and my adviser recommended surveying. I found a company that I could do work experience with, which was unpaid for about 3 weeks. And my eagerness to learn got me a job offer. I worked so hard and in 3 years went from assistant to junior then surveyor to monitoring surveyor, which is quite an achievement.I have always strived to get a job and career I love. From the moment I started as an assistant I knew this was for me. From day one my passion has to become a department leader, supporting and encouraging younger surveyors. I have already started to attend company events and networking evenings, meeting clients and working my way to becoming a geospatial consultant where I can put all my knowledge to use. "
The life I live
"A lot of people are surprised when they hear I compete in clay pigeon shooting, this is where I use shotguns to shoot clay targets. I also go to the gym on a daily basis lifting weights and practising yoga. I am very musical and can play the violin, guitar, ukulele flute and play the piano every day when I get home. I am also learning the saxophone too. My friends and I meet up once a week for a catch-up, this is important as there is nothing better than an evening of laughter. "
My typical day
"The day starts with coming into the office to meet my team and pick up our equipment for the day. When we get to site we meet with the site manager to sign in and discuss any difficulties or any changes that could occur. I then get my equipment and set it up and start measuring. Once I have measured everything that is needed we download the data and head to the office. At the office we process the data by running it through a program which connects it all together. Once we have done this I can start to draw a 3D model, or write a report, which gets checked and then sent to the client. Every day is different and I am constantly on different sites with different challenges exploring all parts of London and the UK. The drawings we send to client gets used to design houses and buildings as well as demolish them too. "
My qualifications
"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels)Post secondary education A-levels (Geography, Music and Food Technology) Undergraduate degree Geography BSc Hons"
