Programme Manager at Network Rail
I'd say go with what you enjoy, not what other people may be doing or what other people may be interested in. If you enjoy a subject at school, look further into how you could do that as a career, but look broadly on how you could use the skills elsewhere. You don't need to follow the crowd!
About Bronnie...
Who am I?
"When I read my personality types I thought they hit the nail on the head! I use my ‘coordinator’ type in my day to day work all the time; as a programme manager I coordinate projects – I make sure they have clear actions with dates and are kept on track. I also use my ‘influencer’ type as part of my job. In my industry people have been working the same way for years and are typically pretty hesitant to change; but as part of the business improvement team change is something we often end up striving for! I therefore use my ability to influence to get people on side; I understand the reasons why they may be hesitant and explain to them the reasons why we may be changing something. Lastly with the manager type – I’m reasonably new to managing people and would like to think I’m doing a good job! However I’ve always been the natural leader and the type to take charge; I was the unofficial representative of my graduate cohort and this tends to wind up being my role. I used to shy away from this and bite my tongue bit I’ve learnt that a bit of bossiness is a strength when used in the right way!"
What do I do?
"I manage key business change projects, working directly for the East Midlands Route Director at Network Rail. Our route runs from St Pancras International to just south of Sheffield, including Leicester, Nottingham, Derby to name a few of the main stations! My portfolio is quite varied and includes train performance improvement schemes in our 1st 50 Miles out of St Pancras Station, building new depots to replace ours which are in a poor state, and removing any work from taking place with trains running from our route. The key thing that drew me to this job was the variety, no day is the same and it's great to be able to see everything that's going on in the business. I've been involved in some really exciting things, and going out on track has got to be one of the best things I get to do!"
How did I get here?
"What I wanted to do for my job has changed quite a lot, and I still couldn't tell you exactly what I want do in future. Although I studied Law at University, I decided I didn't want to pursue a job in it during my second year. I then decided to look into finance as a career and secured a summer placement at Network Rail. I wanted to go into finance as I thought it would be a good grounding, as I'm quite ambitious and wanted to climb the career ladder! I didn't think about where I wanted to work much at that point, I just knew I wanted to work for a company that didn't focus purely on making money. I've worked for Network Rail for nearly 5 years now and really enjoy it, the service we provide motivates me, and keeps it interesting."
The life I live
"I like to go on countryside walks and I feel they're really stress busting. I'm fortunate to live in a really beautiful place so can't wait to get my walking boots on! I also go shooting on a Sunday morning. It's great to get outside. I also play my Xbox as I like delving into fantasy gaming and exploring a new world!"
My typical day
"Two days for me are never the same! One day I'll be on back to back meetings and sitting on my emails but other days I'll don my orange and get out on the track. Ultaimtely my job is to solve problems for people. For example when people don't have the time to do something important they've been meaning to get around to, I do it for them. This is also true of anywhere that our business isn't performing; for example some of our offices were in a mess, they were old and tidy, and it's my job now to ensure they get either a new one or a refurbishment. I deal with a lot of people, and being able to help them is a really fulfilling part of my job."
My qualifications
"A Levels: History, Biology and Geology.Vocational Qualifications: BTECs in Public Services and Aviation StudiesUndergraduate Degree: Law LLB, University of BirminghamI'm a fully qualified and chartered Management Accountant with CIMA. The cherry on the cake for my time in education was that in my final CIMA exam I came joint 1st in the World!I'm currently studying a degree in Railway Operations alongside my job.I took quite a 'normal' route. I did my GCSEs, then my A-levels in a school. I then went to University in Birmingham before joining Network Rail on the graduate scheme."
