Commercial Project Engineer at Briar Chemicals Ltd

STEM Ambassador
Don’t worry about what everyone else around you is doing, focus on subjects and activities you enjoy and are good at! Maths is a great subject at school because there is usually one correct answer and it forms a basis for most STEM careers. Later in life you’ll find there is almost always more than one solution to any one problem.

About Carmina...

Who am I?

"My top 3 personality types were Manager, Trainer and Campaigner. I think that these fit with my work because in my role I have to manage my time very well as I often have many tasks to complete and communicate with people. Often I have to delegate tasks to others and ask for these tasks to be prioritised which requires persuasive skills."

What do I do?

"As Commercial Project Engineer my role is shared between Engineering Projects. I work alongside a team of engineers in design and implementation of process plants. Within Commercial, I project evaluation and new product enquiries, working to liaise between commercial and technical as well as assisting with international exhibitions, PR resource and promotional materials. The two things I enjoy most about my job are meeting different people from different walks of life with interesting stories and career paths and also travelling internationally for exhibits to meet potential customers. I love continuously learning – every project is different and requires expertise in different areas, even though I am a chemical engineer by trade, some projects involve structural engineering e.g. building walls and steel supports and pipe bridges, electrical engineering e.g. wiring new motors and instruments, control and software engineering e.g. setting up the screens and automation in control rooms. With each job you learn a little bit more. I am aiming to become a chartered chemical engineer which normally requires 4-5 years industrial experience to build up the knowledge and responsibility and an assessment. After this more opportunities will open up for pay rise, management roles and senior engineering roles."

How did I get here?

"After completing my A Levels, I moved to University to study Chemical Engineering! My dad was a builder and when I was younger I saw a lot of construction sites and was taken to lots of science museums such as the Isambard Kingdom Brunel and James Watt museum. I enjoyed learning about inventions and how they have revolutionised the world. I also watched TV programmes that showed how things were made from sweets in a factory to ships and cars. I thought the machines were amazing and cool and I wanted to be part of the process of raw materials becoming a useful object, machine or edible food! I am always inspired by any powerful females in business and in media, most recently Wonder Woman!"

The life I live

"In my spare time I train and play touch rugby for Norwich in a national league. I also enjoy hiking, reading, watching TV series and films."

My typical day

"Within my role, every day is different, depending on what projects are going on and what stage they are at. During the planning and procurement stages of a project, there might be design calculations and drawings being made and specifications for new equipment in the office at the computer. During the construction stage of a project, I might spend a lot of time out on plant, communicating with operations and managing contractors. At the moment there is a project on our site in the commissioning stage, whereby a new process plant has been designed and constructed and is now being tested for the first time to make a new product."

My qualifications

"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels)Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A level maths (B), physics (B), Chemistry (B), Further maths (E). Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) Chemical Engineering (2:1) with Diploma in Industrial Studies (Year in Industry) Post-graduate degree (MSc, MA, etc.) Masters in Engineering (MEng, Hons) "
