Ellen Maton
Water Quality Scientist at Northumbrian Water
Choose science subjects at school and A level and for my particular job, a degree in a science subject would be needed. I would generally just suggest that you should always do things you are interested in even if you can't immediately see what job you would do relating to it as there are so many jobs you wouldn't even realise exist until you're already on the path towards them.
About Ellen...
Who am I?
"I enjoy analysing things like data and problems but also enjoy working with others towards common goals, which sounds a lot like Developer and Influencer. My role involves a lot of problem solving which often requires the knowledge of people from several different technical roles, so the more logical part of my job is aided by my Investigator personality."
What do I do?
"My job is varied and involves both desk based tasks as well as duties across the counties we operate within and involves communicating with and building relationships with a variety of departments. The role involves liaising with and advising areas within the business such as production and network teams as well as the laboratory regarding issues of water quality. The role also involves a lot of data handling and report writing including providing data to our regulators and compiling reports in the event of failures, as the accuracy of the work is very important. We also ensure that our regulatory sampling programme is achieved as defined by our regulators to ensure that the water produced by our treatment works is of high quality from source, all the way to the customers tap. I enjoy the analytics and reporting side of things because I have always enjoyed working with data but I also enjoy the variety of the role and that it is not all desk based. I enjoy the communication with other departments, sharing expertise with people who are knowledgeable in their fields and finding the best solutions. My managers are very supportive regarding my progression within the company and many people have worked for Essex & Suffolk Water for many years, progressing through various roles and continuously learning."
How did I get here?
"I was always interested in environmental science since I was a child and my dad got me interested in wildlife. At university, I was particularly inspired by my tutor who worked within the Ecotoxicology field. This is how I ended up doing my dissertation project (supervised by him) around the area of water quality."
The life I live
"In my spare time I like reading, and walking outdoors e.g. woodland, nature reserves."
My typical day
"Data analysis and report writing are examples of desk based activities I may be doing day-to-day but I also travel across the counties we operate in to attend meeting relating to water production. Some days I may be carrying out a site audit or entering a confined space such as a final water reservoir so the variety of the role is great."
