About Harriet...

Who am I?

"I am a Hydrologist in the Water Resources team at Northumbrian Water. As a team we provide technical input into the company’s water-related activities, by setting strategies, suggesting tactical responses and monitoring the performance of water resources, and we ensure that sufficient resources are available to meet customer demand. The Quality Controller type likes things to be fair, legal, honest and safe, which is very important when dealing with projects related to public water supply, as is being good at spotting errors and unforeseen consequences so that our customers are not put at risk. The Coach type is good at helping people get what they need, and listening and understanding what people want, which is important when helping colleagues and customers. Working in a team is important because I am part of a team where we all have different functions but need to share knowledge frequently. The Developer job type is creative and practical, and is good at coming up with creative ideas to solve problems, which is useful when dealing with water resource issues."

What do I do?

"My job involves: undertaking water resource modelling, enabling us to see the conditions under which we are able to supply customer demand, and to ensure that our current resources and infrastructure can provide a reliable service; carrying out hydrological studies and investigations to support the implementation of water resource schemes; maintaining datasets for use in water resource assessments; producing technical reports for our regulators; and providing hydrological advice to internal and external contacts. I am involved in the production of our Water Resources Management Plan, a report that we publish every 5 years in which we show how we intend to maintain the balance between demand and supply over the following 25 years and beyond.I like that I am the only Hydrologist in the company so I have specific responsibilities and have the opportunity to add my own ideas and personality to the role. The starting salary of my current role was £29,651. The starting salary of my first full-time job, as a Graduate Hydrologist, was £25,800. "

How did I get here?

"When I was growing up I was really interested in volcanoes and earthquakes, and I wanted to study volcanoes and present television documentaries about them! I identified Geophysics as a relevant subject to study at university, as it would enable me to understand the geophysical process that create volcanoes and earthquakes. I studied Maths and science subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) at GCSE, alongside Business Studies, English Language and Literature, Geography, German and ICT. I then studied Geography, Maths and Physics at A Level, which enabled me to study the BSc Geophysics with Geology course at Durham University. Whilst studying for the BSc I realised that the clearest career path from my degree led towards working in the oil & gas industry, or in geological research, neither of which I felt I would be satisfied doing. During the degree I selected to study two optional modules that covered basic hydrogeology and climate science, and I performed very well in those modules and found them interesting. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I completed an MSc in Hydrology and Climate Change at Newcastle University. Immediately after finishing the MSc, I began my first full-time job as Graduate Hydrologist at Mott MacDonald, a global engineering consultancy. In August 2017 I applied for the role of Hydrologist at Essex & Suffolk Water (owned by Northumbrian Water), and moved to Essex. In December 2019 I relocated within Northumbrian Water to Durham, remaining the Hydrologist for Essex & Suffolk Water."

The life I live

"I am a member of a netball team, so I generally have training and/or a match a couple of nights a week. In my spare time I also enjoy running, pub quizzing, and TV binge-watching."

My typical day

"On a normal day I will first catch-up with emails, and then I will assess the water resource situation for the day. This involves looking at the river flows and reservoir levels, the raw water pumping rates, and the outflows from the water treatment works. If anything has changed from the previous day, I have discussions with the relevant colleagues to establish why, and I sometimes have to re-run my models that forecast the future reservoir storages based upon the current water resource situation. I also attend meetings with the Environment Agency or other water companies."

My qualifications

"I studied Geography, Maths and Physics at A Level, and was accepted onto the BSc Geophysics with Geology course at Durham University. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I completed an MSc in Hydrology and Climate Change at Newcastle University."
