Emma McCreesh

Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) Engineer at Thales

The most important piece of advice I would give a girl if she wants to do what I do is to not be afraid of trying to achieve the things you want and try and plan how you should progress. Ensure the subjects you choose for GCSEs and A Level will allow you to apply for the degree, apprenticeship or job you want to do. Look at apprenticeships, I was never told at school they were even an option, but Thales and other companies now even offer an apprenticeship with a degree.

About Emma...

Who am I?

"I think my personality type fits with the work I do as I have to work closely with a lot of different people and need to understand the customer needs and work with the other Engineers to produce the product the customer wants. This fits closely with the Coach personality. Being understanding and helpful, like the Trainer personality, in my job is really important both for working with the Engineering team and with the customer. The Quality Controller personality type fits with my job role as I have to be fair when dealing with the customer and their expectations of what the Engineering team can achieve. Also within my job I need to be able to spot any potential issues for maintenance purposes."

What do I do?

"My job role is an Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) Engineer. I am involved throughout the product life cycle to ensure the product is reliable and maintainable and therefore cheaper overall. ILS are involved with the design to ensure the product produced is easily maintained by the customer and will last for the length of time the customer wants it to last. I really like the physical aspects of my job, actually being able to use and perform maintenance tasks with the product is both fun and is good for better understanding of the system and how the customer will use the system. Working with the MOD and other military organisations is very interesting. There are opportunities for travel and people in my team have been to Indonesia and Malaysia. My team is a very small, there are only 7 of us and a manager. The ILS team is within the Customer Support department so there are opportunities to progress both within the ILS team and in the wider Customer Support team, or I could progress through the other engineering functions."

How did I get here?

"My Dad initially inspired me, he was a bicycle mechanic and I loved being in his shop watching and trying to help him do maintenance and fix the bikes. My Grandpa was a car mechanic as well and when I was 3 my Nanny made me a boiler suit because I was always following him about in the garage. Both of my parents encouraged me to do what I liked doing and my toys growing up were a mixture of both stereotypical boy toys and girl toys, (Lego, cars, dolls etc). Another person who inspires me is my manager from my previous job at Bombardier. He had a lot of belief in my abilities and always encourages me to go for the things that interest me and what I want to do. Through working with Bombardier I have had the opportunity to travel internationally. I have travelled to Montreal and Toronto in Canada and Moscow in Russia to present MSG-3 analysis (maintenance planning analysis). These were presented to working groups which included customers and members of air regulatory bodies (e.g. FAA, TC, EASA). These were great opportunities as I was able to talk with the customers about the design and improvements on previous aircraft and ensure we are meeting the rules set by the air regulators. I also developed relationships with those that I met and it was interesting hearing the stories of these experienced Engineers, air regulators and maintenance personnel."

The life I live

"In my spare time I like to bake and have been making cakes and buns for family and friends’ birthdays for the past 4 years. I really enjoy it and it de-stresses me. I also love cycling: I have done the Lap of the Lough twice, which is a cycle around Lough Neagh which is approximately 100 miles. I have also cycled around Lake Geneva in Switzerland which was over 100 miles. As I love to travel and experience different cultures, I like to combine travelling with other hobbies such as cycling and baking/cooking (cookery classes). I also love to read and I didn't have very much time to read while completing my MSc so I'm looking forward to getting back into that."

My typical day

"My typical day includes going to product meetings to discuss progress of new products. I need to review the product structure and discuss the design and functions with other Engineering groups (e.g. systems, design, safety). I will have a number of things to be made throughout the product life cycle – for example Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) lists, Ease of Maintenance Plan and reports. An Ease of Maintenance Assessment will be performed on each new product, which involves physical use of the system to perform maintenance tasks."
