Lacey Harrison
Spacetrack Analyst at Serco Defence
Look up at the sky, that’s your limit. I studied 3 different disciplines of engineering at various levels because it was within my capability to do so. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do, just love whatever you do.
About Lacey...
Who am I?
"My types are Explorer, Investigator and Quality Controller. Tracking objects requires some phenomenal power and technology; the ‘Explorer’ in me loves researching all the equipment that is used and the technology on the objects that are tracked. As an ‘Investigator’ type, I can work with a close knit team and get on well with the various RAF personnel that are posted here."
What do I do?
"I am a Spacetrack Analyst/Operator employed by Serco Defence. Based at RAF Fylingdales, I work alongside RAF personnel to facilitate Space Situational Awareness using the 360deg solid state phased array radar. The outcome is an overall knowledge of space objects and space launch events around the world and how the UK plays an important role in the Space Surveillance Network. Unfortunately for the questionnaire, the most exciting parts of my career so far are classified. They've been pretty exciting though! My starting salary was £23,000."
How did I get here?
"I have always drawn inspiration from a close friend who is an actor and who is persistent at improving her craft. I really admire her ability to stick at it while raising 3 young children. My friend inspired me to better myself, return to education and keep learning for as long as the opportunities were there. I went back into education after spending 7 years working in retail. I started with a Level 2 Welding Operations course, followed by the more challenging Level 3 Mechanical Engineering, before moving onto a HNC in Civil Engineering. I found my existing role by chance as I had just finished my HNC and was looking to leave the small metal fabrication shop I worked in. My passion for Space, and strong mathematical background, impressed the interviewers enough to land me the job. There are also progression routes within the company to other engineering related roles, one of which I am currently in the process of learning and hoping to progress into at some point."
The life I live
"I enjoy attending conventions based on popular TV shows and visiting Canada. One day I would love to live and work in Canada."
My typical day
"I deal with a lot of data analysis, trying to discover any changes in patterns or behaviours. I also do a lot of research on upcoming space launches and space related events. No two days are the same and there’s a continual learning process with everything."
My qualifications
"I started with a Level 2 Welding Operations course, followed by the more challenging Level 3 Mechanical Engineering, before moving onto a HNC in Civil Engineering. "
