Hannah Britt

Postdoctoral Research Associate at University College London

I think the most important thing to do in what I do is to be resilient and persistent as it can be difficult (especially when things go wrong or you experience challenges) but it will be worth it!

About Hannah...

Who am I?

"My types are Investigator, Developer, Explorer and Quality Controller. I feel that my personality types definitely fit with what I do, particularly the Investigator and Explorer traits. My job lets me use several skills which fit with the descriptors in my personality types, such as being inquisitive and solving puzzles. I am persistent, methodical, self-motivated, conscientious and curious. I enjoy the fact that her work allows her to be curious and inquisitive, and to learn new things every day."

What do I do?

"I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Biosciences department at University College London (UCL), although my educational background is in Chemistry. I carry out research into better understanding how viruses work, something which is fundamentally important in keeping people happy and healthy! Every day of my career is exciting. It is always a little thrill when I find out something new or finally get an experiment to work after a lot of challenges. My starting salary was £34,635. From a postdoctoral researcher role the usual route for progression is either to stay within a university as a researcher and lecturer, or move into industrial scientific research. However, if you have scientific skills you really are an asset so there are loads of different opportunities beyond those options!"

How did I get here?

"Several people have inspired me during her education and career; however, the most important are all the wonderful everyday female scientists I have had the opportunity to work with. After leaving school, I went to Durham University to get my undergraduate degree. I chose to study Natural Sciences as I loved all the sciences and wanted to be able to learn more about all my favourite bits. After graduating I knew that I really enjoyed scientific research, so I studied for a PhD in Chemistry, which then led me on to my postdoctoral position at UCL. Throughout my career I have been motivated by a love of science and being in the lab."

The life I live

"In my spare time, I love baking and spending time with her family and friends."

My typical day

"A typical work day is normally spent in the lab. I am lucky that I gets quite a lot of freedom in what I do, which works well because I am very self-motivated. The main travel within my job is to meet with collaborators at other universities or to attend scientific conferences. Conferences in particular are really great as I meet so many different people from all over the world, each researching something new and different."

My qualifications

"Undergraduate Degree - Natural Sciences, PhD in Chemistry"
