Anni Mekhail
Engineering Product Manager at Google
I think my biggest piece of advice would be to try lots of different things early on and be pro-active about learning.
About Anni...
Who am I?
"I trained as a medical doctor and work with a team of engineers now as part of a health technology company building software and machine learning models for health technology."
What do I do?
"I work with a team of engineers, data scientists, and product designers managing the development of products that use machine learning to collate known research and suggest possible medical drug structures. I like how my job is a mixture of technical knowledge, and creativity."
How did I get here?
"I went to high school in New Zealand but I did the equivalent of A levels in Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Calculus, French, English, and Computing and AS levels in Physics and Economics. After high school I did one year of pre-medical courses at university where those with the top 10% of marks were accepted into medical school. After a few years of clinical medicine I began working with digital health companies and studying data science courses. I get most of my inspiration from reading books."
The life I live
"I like rock climbing, and weights training. I enjoy reading, good brunches, and shopping. I have been doing a post graduate course in statistics which I have found really interesting. "
My typical day
"I start my day with a stand up with the engineering and design team, we go through what we did yesterday, what we plan on working on today, and any key roadblocks to address. Then I have a user interview scheduled with one of my key users, I go through with her on how she uses the product and any pain points she has, I document my findings. I have a bit of spare time so I spend this time doing analysis of data on our product usage and product experiments, I use mainly SQL and python to analyse this. I take the results of my user interviews and analysis and update a strategy deck, I will be presenting the strategy deck with my product roadmap and plans to the leads for sign off after lunch. I have a 1:1 meeting with one of my product management colleagues, we catch up weekly as she works on a part of the product close to mine so we need to stay aligned. After the meeting I present my strategy deck and get sign off for my plans. In the afternoon I spend some time with my engineering partner updating the tickets with her for the next two week sprint. Finally the engineering team has a product demo which I attend, they showcase what they built in the last two weeks. "
My qualifications
"Equivalent of A levels in Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Calculus, French, English, and Computing and AS levels in Physics and Economics. After high school I did one year of pre-medical courses at university where those with the top 10% of marks were accepted into medical school.Post graduate online university courses in computer programming for statistics.
