TV Digital & Media Apprentice at BT
I would say go for it, just because you're a girl it doesn't make any difference. Just be confident in what you're doing and what you want to do.
About Kate...
Who am I?
"As an apprentice I'm often in big groups, working with a variety of colleagues from other apprentices, people managers to the Senior Leadership team. My day job is never the same, due to the range of projects and teams I work in. "
What do I do?
"I'm a TV Digital & Media apprentice working at the BT Tower. Every 6 months I rotate around the different teams and at the end of my apprenticeship I chose what team I would like to assimilate into. As well as my operational role I help out with visits, work experience and volunteering. At the end of the scheme I’ll qualify with a full Bachelor’s degree in Digital Technology Solutions. I mainly work BT’s internal networks monitoring services as well as optimising the performance of the Media and Broadcast Platforms. In addition to this I help out with visits, work experience and volunteering. I love that I get the opportunity to go out and volunteer to help make a difference. This can be anything from a team building days to answering the phones for stand up to cancer. There are a lot of interesting high-level projects which I’ve had the opportunity to work on such as the football and BBC’s next-generation network. There's a lot of opportunity for progression into management or in technical expertise due to the responsibility I’m given. "
How did I get here?
"A colleague at work who is now my mentor inspired me. I met him when I was taking my A Levels and he gave an overview of his job role. I then undertook a week work experience with him, and I knew it was my dream career. He has further inspired me to follow his career path."
The life I live
"In addition to my work life, I have an active social life. I own a horse so most evenings and weekends I'm at the stables or competing. I compete in all three disciplines Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country. Also, most Saturdays you'll find me in the pub with my friends."
My typical day
"No two days are the same for me where I rotate around the teams every 6 months. Some of the projects I have worked on include, the BT Sport app collating error code and researching into them. Additionally, I’ve worked on the Premier League Productions and Champions League. I configured and installed all the equipment to be sent to the football grounds, so that the BT Sport Truck can plug into the equipment and our feed can be broadcasted out to billions of viewers."
My qualifications
"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) GCSE- Maths A, English Literature A, English Language B, ICT Triple Distinction, Chemistry B, Food Technology B, Biology C, Physics C, Geography C, Religious Studies C, Dance Distinction Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A Level – ICT B, Film Studies B and English Literature C Apprenticeship (please specify level in other) Level 6 Apprenticeship Working towards a BSc Degree and Level 3 NVQ "
