Christine Cambrook

Keep Maths and Physics as core subjects for Engineering, but don't be afraid to add an arts subject too. Teamwork and people skills are very important in all work, but especially in large project teams!

About Christine ...

Who am I?

"Christine needs to be curious in her job, as she and her team are working out solutions to problems in order to create better designed buildings and cities for the future. This matches the ‘Investigator’ type. Christine is a logical person, which helps when she is writing up reports, and suits the ‘Influencer’ type. Christine also needs to be efficient as she often juggles multiple projects and manages her team's workload, which fits with the ‘Coach’ type."

What do I do?

"Christine helps to manage a small team of people that work on projects relating to water in the built environment. They design new buildings or areas of new cities where water is an issue for the project, usually either flooding or lack of water. Christine writes reports and gives presentations, working closely with architects and other engineers. She and her team are aiming to create better designed buildings and cities. In a typical day, Christine spends time working on her computer, talking to her team and working out solutions to problems. She also attends meetings, listening and talking with clients and collaborators about projects. Her projects can be in London or elsewhere in the UK, and there are different challenges associated with each different location, such as climate or politics. She has also worked in Germany and Italy, and there is a lot of work in the Middle East, including Dubai and Saudi Arabia.Christine really enjoys the variety in her job, her project work is always changing. Christine was really excited to work on the London Olympic Games. She was part of the team working to minimise the carbon emissions associated with operating all the venues such as the London Stadium."

How did I get here?

"Christine was inspired by her mum who was a science teacher. At school she found that she enjoyed drawing as well as science which led her towards Architectural Engineering, as she wanted to improve the sustainability of the built environment. She studied Engineering at university, including a study abroad year and a master’s in Architectural Engineering, before starting work in the industry on a starting salary of £24,000. Within BuroHappold, Christine has worked in sustainability in buildings and water management in urban design, before getting into her current role."

The life I live

"Christine has a small baby so she finds she doesn't have much spare time at the moment. When she gets the chance, she enjoys yoga, cycling and swimming. She would even like to swim in the sea more! In the future, Christine is considering having a change of direction in her career so that she can look for a new challenge, but she’s not sure yet what it will be!"
