Faye Bowser
We live in a brilliant time where traditional barriers are being broken and organisations clearly see the value of having a diverse and inspirational group of employees. I would encourage any young girl to think about what they enjoy and where they feel that they can add value.
About Faye...
Who am I?
"Faye is self-motivated, logical and curious, and uses this to challenge traditional thinking and to create new business models and technical systems that meet customers’ objectives. This matches with the ‘Innovator’ and ‘Explorer’ types, and is important to be able to transform an idea in a solution that can be put into operation. The ‘Coach’ type complements the people aspect of Faye’s current role, listening and understanding what is important for a person when developing a system. This is essential for a successful project with the objectives of the customer at the heart of everything. People skills are essential for both leading a team and successfully managing customer relationships."
What do I do?
"Faye’s role combines sales, customer management, engineering, strategy and business development. She works with energy intensive users to get a good understanding of how much energy they're using, what for and what important considerations they have, and uses this to develop a local energy system that works towards their sustainability targets, reduces cost and provides an innovative solution. The ideal outcome is to find a solution that works for the customer and ultimately improves the competitiveness of the UK economy and keeps us progressing towards a decarbonised society. On a typical day, Faye shares the work that has been developed with customers and discusses what is possible to move a project forward. She shares this feedback within the company and starts working on how to support customer objectives and what practical steps to take. She also attends events, conferences and meetings to learn about and contribute to energy sector goals such as decarbonisation. She has to be very organised and responsive with phone calls and emails to make sure she is following up on commitments and always looking to identify new opportunities to explore. The most exciting part of Faye’s career has been transitioning from a supporting role into a leadership position for customer management. She really enjoys working directly with customers, giving feedback on possible solutions and finding a way to deliver. She thrives on responsibility and likes to deliver a high level of service. "
How did I get here?
"Faye never had a particular revelation to be an Engineer, it took her a long time to find what she wanted by ruling out things that she didn't want. She left school at 16 and carried out an Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering with Siemens. It was a combination of academic and practical applications and included a variety of subjects from Systems Engineering to Nanotechnology, Statistical Mathematics and Project Management. Faye spent a lot of time thinking about what role would help her to thrive, and concluded that it was important for her to work with people, to have the ability to travel, to use multiple of skills from engineering to project management and sales, and to be able to give something valuable back to society. Her first role at Siemens was as a trainee Commissioning Engineer in Field Service. Faye targeted a strategic role and moved from Customer Management to Sales then Government Affairs and finally into Business Development, and she is working towards her passion of decarbonisation with a love of the environment in mind. Faye is now a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and she is in the process of applying for Chartership. A chartered Engineer can earn about £48,000."
The life I live
"Faye really loves music, anything from going to gigs and festivals, to playing the piano, and going to the theatre. She enjoys spending time with friends and family, especially eating good food! She also likes to stay healthy by running and cycling. Faye also loves to travel and experience new things. Throughout her career, Faye has visited many amazing places, like China, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Belarus, Singapore, Germany and Spain! It's always been a great experience for her to work in other countries because she has seen each country as a visitor but also got a real experience of what it is like for people day to day by working in the offices and amongst the team. She has made many great friends throughout these travel experiences. Faye is now focused on the UK market and has enjoyed applying what she has learnt in her home country.Large organisations like Siemens love people with the passion and ability to progress, so there are many opportunities for Faye, both within the company and in the Energy sector in general. She is currently completing a master’s in Business Administration, and a Leadership programme and has a good network of mentors to support her in achieving her goals. Faye is very passionate about decarbonisation of the energy sector, so in the future she would like to continue working in this area, hopefully in a leadership position within Siemens. She loves working for a global organisation with opportunities to travel, so this is something she aims to take advantage of. Faye also has a passion for Women in Engineering and Women in Leadership positions and she really wants to show young females what is possible when you set your mind to something and feel passionate about the cause!"
