About Bryony...

Who am I?

"The ‘Quality Controller’ personality type fits Bryony, as the work she does absolutely must be completed to a high standard so she has to be persistent and good at spotting errors and deciding whether or not something conforms to regulations, so that the public is not put at risk by her company’s designs. Bryony is also the ‘Coach’ type - she needs to be empathic to work in a range of teams that must consistently work efficiently and safely together. As the ‘Innovator’ type, Bryony is self-motivated and always willing to challenge the status quo, as the engineering industry is always evolving and she feels new ideas and methods of working should always be put forward and challenged."

What do I do?

"As an Aerospace Engineer in fuel systems, Bryony works efficiently in a team. She focuses on overcoming design issues. She also networks outside of the team and looks to allocate skill-sets appropriately. Every day her team has a daily stand-up meeting to discuss what work they are each doing, and any issues they are having. She then networks with various engineers from other departments to help her with her work, whether that be writing documents to performing analyses on design models. She always gets the opportunity to shadow people who are more senior than her, so she can get a glimpse into what the future may be like for her. Bryony really enjoys being able to network with other departments. It keeps her work interesting and constantly evolving as she is always hearing new ideas that broaden her way of thinking. Working on site full time and having the opportunity to have her own desk and company laptop has given her a real sense of pride and independence. "

How did I get here?

"Bryony did A-Levels in Maths, Physics, Music and Art at sixth form. She also chose to complete the Engineering Education Scheme (England) elective (EESE) which involved working in universities and on-site with various engineering-based companies. After leaving sixth form, Bryony worked in several part-time jobs including as a school cleaner, a waitress and a shop manager. Though Bryony is an only child, one her older cousins who is a Civil Engineer stressed the importance of apprenticeships and the regret she had for not choosing that route. So, instead of applying for university Bryony applied for apprenticeships in aeronautical engineering. University debt put Bryony off applying to university, and the chance to enrol on an apprenticeship meant she could be applying her skills whilst learning them instead of spending more time solely in education. In an apprenticeship she is able to continue her education to a high standard (she is currently completing a BEng degree), whilst still practising and applying her knowledge, feeling useful in society, being rewarded for her work and being treated as an employee instead of a student. Her starting salary as an Apprentice was £15,000 and Airbus are paying for her university tuition fees and NVQ fees."

The life I live

"In her spare time, Bryony likes to go to the gym, as well as doing art, playing the piano and socialising with friends. Through Airbus, Bryony will soon be given the chance to travel to Europe for apprenticeship events or STEM events, which will open new possibilities for her. Airbus gives all employees the opportunity to travel to various sites abroad, including a mandatory tour of the sister site in England as well as opportunities to fly out to Toulouse, Madrid, Hamburg or New York if the current work facilitates it. The Airbus apprenticeship works on a placement rota where each placement lasts three months, and the apprentice is able to choose their placements based on what suits them best. Hard work may be rewarded with a pay rise and Bryony is really pleased that the company are very accommodating to new feasible ideas that allow apprentices to move forward with their career. In the future, Bryony would love to still be working at Airbus, but in a different role."
