About Hayley...
Who am I?
"Hayley really enjoys the diversity of her job. She is very resourceful and loves knowing that her research of the oceans can help to make the planet safer. That fits in with the ‘Investigator’ type. She has to be organised, efficient and good at focusing on logical tasks, as her job involves a lot of data processing, and writing tutorials and reports, which suits the ‘Quality Controller’ type. Hayley is also collaborative and good at managing and working with people when training them to use the data and when resolving user support queries. That really suits the ‘Trainer’ type."
What do I do?
"Hayley’s job involves half research and half service delivery of user support and training. It requires her to do computer programming and graphic design, as well as writing reports and stories, giving talks, tweeting, making measurements from boats, teaching, and travelling - it's a very diverse job!She starts the day by checking if she has any meetings scheduled, then she goes through her emails to see if she has any urgent user support queries to respond to. Then she works through her to do list which could include for example running some data processing, making satellite images to share on Twitter, writing tutorials in the Python programming language, interviewing researchers, writing news stories, booking flights to conferences, and writing up research. She also attends meetings to plan new projects or to report back on results.Hayley really enjoys working in a fast advancing field, with lots of chances to learn about new things. She also enjoys the diversity of topics and people she interacts with. She can find herself speaking to anyone from a politician, to someone from a space agency, a shellfish farmer, a web developer, or someone in the media. Hayley was excited to recently work on helping to grow the use of marine satellite data for the European Commission Copernicus programme, contributing to the world’s most ambitious Earth observation project. She got to watch the launch of the latest satellite from the operations centre, and to take part in filming for a massive open online course, and she even gave a TEDx talk. Wow!"
How did I get here?
"Hayley was inspired by her grandparents who told her stories about people and the planet and instilled in her the idea of helping humanity, and by David Attenborough’s documentaries which showed her the beauty of the Earth. She wanted to find a way to help people and to keep the planet habitable. Hayley went on to do a degree in Environmental Science, followed by a master’s in Oceanography and a PhD in Marine Remote Sensing. Since getting her current job on a starting salary of £30,000, she has written many proposals to drive her work onwards in different directions."
The life I live
"After her work, Hayley’s second great love is food. She likes to experiment in the kitchen, trying new cuisines, working with new ingredients and gadgets, and taking on challenges like reducing how much meat she eats, eating cheaply, and reducing waste. She also likes to hike and to scuba dive, and she is even a certified rescue diver. She is also keen on acrobatic sports like gymnastics, pole dancing, and acro-yoga. Hayley loves to explore cities, and she is thrilled that she gets to travel in with her job all the time. In the last few years she has been to France, Germany, Latvia, Italy, Czech Republic, Portugal, India, South Africa, Ghana, Tanzania, and the Philippines! In her organisation, Hayley has the opportunity to progress to be a manager. In the future, she would like to help develop the next generation of Earth observation programmes, creating new applications and uses of this data."
