Head of Station Capacity Planning at Network Rail
Being persistent has been really important in getting to where I am today.
About Isabelle...
Who am I?
"I had to be self-motivated and organised as when I joined Network Rail there was no one else who did what I did and no one who told me what to do. My job involves making sure stations are safe, as well as planning ahead for the stations of tomorrow. This fits well with the ‘Developer’ and ‘Investigator’ types. I also needs to be logical in making recommendations to the Department of Transport about which stations need investment which suits the ‘Quality Controller’ type."
What do I do?
"My job is about planning for the stations of tomorrow and making sure stations are safe now too. Me and my team make recommendations to the Department of Transport about which stations need investment. I really enjoy enabling my team to be the best they can be and helping them to get better every day. I am leading the discipline, working on vision and strategy. I am proud that I can help passengers make their journey better. I am excited to have built my own team from scratch. When I started there was only me doing station capacity planning and now I have a team of 17. I have been absolutely determined in setting up my team and have worked really hard to get there."
How did I get here?
"I studied for a post-graduate degree in Geography, specialising in ancillary transport planning and agriculture (in Germany). After that I started off working as a Graduate Transport Planner in a consultancy in the UK. I worked my way up to Senior Consultant, before joining Network Rail where I specialised in station capacity planning. I believe that the subject you study at school or university is not the most important thing. At first, I didn’t enjoy studying transport planning at university but it is now my job! The most important thing for me was to find what I was passionate about. My main passion is to create a safer environment for passengers, and that is what has driven me over the last 15 years in Network Rail."
The life I live
"I love design in general, and specifically interior design. I'm doing a course to learn more about it and I practice it doing up our own house. I also love going walking and cycling. I like travelling to other countries. Through my job, I get to visit other places in the UK and also occasionally some European places as part of a best practice exchange that I have with other infrastructure managers. I now have this habit that whereever I go in the world, I have to visit its railway stations."
My typical day
"My workload has very much changed from when I first begun and set up this team. Now, as the leader of the team, I do a Monday morning check in with my team where we discuss what everyone is doing this week and then we discuss any resourcing issues or problems people face. I check in with my boss and peers too. There are always emails to reply too or forward on to people in my team if they are better placed to answer. Currently I am getting involved in how we transition into a new company called Great British Railways. This is a huge programme for the whole railway industry and will change how we do things. My boss has asked me to help him work on this which I find very exciting as I can be involved in how this new company should look. I might also work with someone in my team in how we can sell a new service we have developed to make planning the railway easier. My team loves to innovate and challenge how we do things, so they are always learning something new. I might also have a mentoring or career development discussion with someone external as part of Women in Transport or the Transport Planning Society or with someone from my team."
