About Lavinia...

Who am I?

"I am a logical, practical and efficient individual which are characteristics suitable to my role as Technology Consultant where I has to help design trials and tests for new technology. Naturally, I am suited to the ‘Developer’ personality type as the majority of her job involves developing new things and solving problems that have not yet solved – also emphasising the ‘Innovator’ side of me! I also fits well with the ‘Investigator’ type as I have to review and analyse what has been done before and work out ways to improve it."

What do I do?

"As a Technology Consultant for a transportation company I help designs trials and tests for new technology to help with transportation, e.g. help cars drive themselves. In a typical day I will attend various meetings to discuss what needs to be done for that project. In relation to this, I will work on a presentation or technical paper to tell people how to organise their trial or tests, and what they need to think about specifically. I will write up the requirements and scope needed when building new technology and implementing it into the environment. I enjoy that I get to meet a lot of very smart people from different backgrounds. I also get enjoyment out of coming up with things that no one has ever thought of before and seeing it being tested in real life. Amazingly, I got to be one of the first people to sit in and test a pod that drives itself! "

How did I get here?

"My brother was a huge inspiration and motivation for me. He studied computing, which I saw as a man’s profession – I wanted to prove to him and myself that women could do it to! Therefore, I studied Computer Science at University where I completed her degree. After education, I went to work in research and development at a defence company where I worked on autonomous drones. I have now adapted my skillset to work with autonomous cars. "

The life I live

"I have lots of different hobbies that I enjoy doing in my spare time. I particularly like aerial and circus skills so during the week I will do things like trapeze skills, silk and pole – wow! At University, I even used to be the Aerial and Pole Fitness Instructor, which I managed to do whilst completing my PhD. In addition to circus skills, I also keep myself busy by playing tennis at weekends and chasing after my 1 year old toddler! In the future, I aspire to be a world-famous scientist and be the ‘go-to’ person for autonomous vehicle technology and reasoning. "

My typical day

"I work on projects involving Connected and Autonomous vehicles - cars that drive themselves and cars which talk to each other. At the moment I am designing a trial to test Connected Vehicles in Ireland. The cars will talk to the infrastructure like traffic lights and the infrastructure will talk back to the cars. This will be useful so that the traffic lights can tell the cars how long until the light turns green. I need to design where the trial will happen, how it will work, where to add the \"communication devices\", how many cars they need for the trial, what they will assess and what questions to ask participants."

My qualifications

"GCSE: English Lit, English Lang, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, I.T. (I did 2 GCSEs in I.T), French, German, Polish, R.S, Geography.A Levels: Mathematics (most important for my career choice), Physics. Biology, Psychology, Polish.University: Bsc Hons in Computer Science, PhD in Computer Science"
