About Amy...

Who am I?

"Amy is outgoing, friendly and helpful which really suit the ‘Coach’ and ‘Trainer’ types. This is great as she regularly needs to strike up new relationships and get involved in new teams. Amy is hopefully working towards a role in project management or tendering, both of which match well with the ‘Campaigner’ type."

What do I do?

"As a Higher Apprentice, Amy is getting training through qualifications and work placements to get an overall understanding of the power substations business. Most days are varied depending on her placement at the time, for example a typical day in the office in the engineering department involves working on technical drawings, whereas in the factory a typical day in the test department involves testing newly refurbished circuit breakers and preparing them to be sent back to the customer. Each day is different for Amy and usually provides a new problem to be solved!Amy really enjoys the variety and getting to work as part of a team. The industry and technology is changing and improving all the time, and it is an exciting time to be involved in the industry. She likes the challenges and problem solving which comes with each different task. Amy has loved spending time on site, seeing the construction phase of a substation and meeting customers. She also liked spending time in the test department and doing the high voltage testing, which was hands-on and really gave her an appreciation of the way in which the equipment worked. The part of her career that Amy has enjoyed most so far has been working with schools and being a corporate social responsibility agent, which has allowed her to be part of the STEM work within the business. She has taken a school group around a site, and even presented as part of the Seewomen show! This has turned into a passion for her and getting to pass on her journey and experiences to the younger generation has been great!Excitingly, this year Amy won the Siemens UK Apprentice of the Year award. What an achievement! From this, she has been able to get involved in some really interesting and amazing opportunities, including taking over the Siemens UK Instagram for the day at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, a day she will never forget!"

How did I get here?

"Amy has taken an unconventional route into her Engineering apprenticeship. She did A-Levels and then went to university to study Physical Geography. She then started working in a variety of different sectors, including working as cabin crew and in estate agency. However, she left these roles as she wanted to find a career that provided her with a challenge, allowed her to have a good earning potential and gave her the opportunity to grow within a successful business. Amy came from a family where engineering has been at the core of a lot of careers, and she was inspired by her dad who worked hard to achieve his goals. She applied to the apprenticeship programme at Siemens and was successful in gaining her current position. Amy’s salary as a Higher Apprentice is £15,800. This goes up each year of the apprenticeship by about £3,000. The expected starting salary after the apprenticeship is £25,000 to £30,000. "

The life I live

"In her spare time, Amy teaches at a local dance school, and she is pleased that her work-life balance allows her to dedicate time to this. She loves teaching young people and showing them that you can be a ballerina on a weekend and an engineer during the week! Amy and her partner also like buying and developing properties and they would love to build up their portfolio of properties over time.Amy also has opportunities to travel with her job, as projects can take her all over the UK. Siemens have locations all over the world and Amy may be able to visit these or even move to work from there. Amy loves that fact that Siemens is such a diverse company and there are opportunities to progress into many different areas of the business as well as up into higher management. In the future, Amy would like to see herself in a senior management position and hopefully be inspiring younger generations to come into the business. She really believes that the future is female and that women can reach for the stars!"
