About Ruth...
Who am I?
"Ruth is the Chief of Manufacturing Engineering (Operations) at Rolls-Royce, a famous engineering company that now makes parts for aeroplanes. Ruth describes herself as empathic which is good because in her job she needs to work well with other people. She also needs to have a good overview of operations in the whole department and to be imaginative in order to carefully plan for the future and make improvements. This matches well with the ‘Explorer’, ‘Investigator’ and ‘Developer’ types. Ruth is very self-reliant and enjoys the fact that her job has a good level of autonomy and she can get involved with a lot of different things"
What do I do?
"Ruth is the Chief of Manufacturing Engineering (Operations) at Rolls-Royce, a famous engineering company that now makes parts for aeroplanes. Ruth is the Operational Manager of an Engineering Department which supports the manufacturing and assembly of aircraft components. It is critical that these are produced very accurately to high standards and on time as they are key parts to the aircraft functioning, and doing so safely. Ruth’s work is very varied and involves checking operating statistics. She will need to work out the manufacturing costs and what resources, machinery and workforce skills are needed for each project. She will also need to plan the manufacturing process itself to make sure they have the capacity to produce the parts on time. This can involve her adjusting other projects, increasing the machinery available or increasing and upskilling the workforce. She also monitors the progress and quality of the projects. Ruth particularly enjoys developing apprentices, graduates and other team members."
How did I get here?
"Ruth was inspired by her dad and has been motivated throughout her career to keep learning new things. Ruth originally studied for a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering before joining a Graduate programme. From there she took on an improvement role before becoming a Technical Manager and then a Departmental Manager. Ruth is also a Chartered Engineer. The starting salary for a Mechanical Engineer is about £21,000. Operational Engineering Manager can earn up to £40,000."
The life I live
"In her spare time, Ruth likes hiking, gardening and travelling. Ruth actually speaks German fluently as a result of learning while she was living and working in Germany and German-speaking Italy. In the future, Ruth would like to move into a more senior management role."
