Try to do Maths at A-Level – never underestimate how useful and integral it is. Always be curious and ask questions.
About Elizabeth...
Who am I?
"Elizabeth is a client relationship manager for a company that manufactures high quality seismic equipment. Elizabeth says she is a self-reliant and practical person, as well as a ‘Coach’ type, working both independently and with teams to ensure that clients get resolutions to their problems and that her teams are supported to do this. She is an out-going person and this is useful as she meets and works with a wide range of people each day. She describes herself as curious and intuitive, and this is evident in her ability to think commercially and to use her ‘Innovator’ and ‘Explorer’ type skills to develop sales and marketing opportunities for the company in all the regions that she is responsible for. She says she is also a real explorer as she travels a lot with her work! "
What do I do?
"Elizabeth is a client relationship manager for a company that manufactures high quality seismic equipment. This equipment can measure earthquakes or volcanic activity, providing early warnings and information about the stability of the earth.Elizabeth’s job is to liaise with clients (academics, government officials, engineers, oil and gas companies etc.) to find solutions to their problems. Her role includes technical sales, customer support, marketing and business management. Her region includes Europe, the Middle East and Africa, she works with people of all different cultures and who speak many different languages. Elizabeth could be writing quotations, talking to distributors and customers, planning projects with engineers, problem solving, or planning events or installations. She works with both technical and commercial staff and her knowledge of geophysics and business is used every day. The most exciting part is being able to talk with world experts about projects that will affect thousands of people from project conception right through to realisation. She got to watch their seismometers being deployed 2000m deep in the ocean off the west coast of Canada, live and in colour. It was awesome. Ocean Networks Canada retweeted her!She says her job is great because she can travel, develop business skills and still maintain a close relationship with the world of science and academics."
How did I get here?
"Elizabeth’s hero is Peggy Hellweg, a hugely respected seismologist, who doesn’t take any nonsense but is great fun.Elizabeth studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and English Literature for A-Level, a mix of science and the arts. She knew she wanted to do applied science and to travel, so geophysics seemed like the perfect fit for her degree. Her dissertation supervisor put her forward for her current role, which she started 2 weeks after graduating. The average salary for a Relationship Manager is about £35,000."
The life I live
"Elizabeth likes climbing, music, travelling, pretty much anything outdoors, and being with her mates of course. She has been with Guralp for one year and has been to New Orleans, Vienna, Scotland, Miami, Albuquerque, Rome and this year she is planning trip to Lisbon, Naples, Vienna (again) and who knows where else, she will see what comes up! She has attended international Earth Science conferences and met world-leading experts in volcanology, seismology and earthquake early warning which have been amazing experiences. She has even danced Salsa with the head of the Latin American and Caribbean Seismology Committee! In the future, Elizabeth has lots of options, to progress in the business, and possibly to get her PhD. She says the world is a big place and she has only just scraped the surface!"
