Be persistent. It's a long route and you've got to enjoy studying and work hard, but it really is worth it.
About Jenny...
Who am I?
"Jenny is training to be a Patent Attorney, helping people to register and protect their inventions by providing legal advice based on her legal training and scientific knowledge. In her job, Jenny has to be able to construct complex arguments, presented clearly and accurately in order to defend each patent application. Being persuasive is a key aspect of this, so she really matches well with the ‘Campaigner’ type! Jenny hopes to demonstrate the 'Trainer' and 'Coach' types more and more as she progresses through her career and helps trainees in the future. This is really important because Trainee Patent Attorneys learn on the job, so having a good mentor is essential. As a curious and empathetic person, Jenny hopes that these skills will help her to motivate and teach her Trainee when the time comes."

How did I get here?
"Jenny has a background in Biology, having studied Microbiology for her BSc. She then studied Medical and Biological Engineering for her postgraduate studies – her MSc included taught modules in Engineering and focussed on the study and design of medical devices and tissue engineering. After that, she went on to study for a PhD in the field of Medical Engineering. Jenny’s starting salary as a Trainee was £28,000. This could go up to about £60,000 once she has fully qualified.Jenny says try to choose to study a subject you're most interested in, but don’t worry if your interests change over time, it is possible to move between subjects. Jenny moved her specialism from Biology to Engineering and has found that having knowledge of both makes her current work all the more varied and multi-disciplinary. "
The life I live
"Jenny loves the outdoors and goes caving and cycling regularly, as well as walking and mountaineering. She is also very creative and likes learning new skills like crochet and knitting! Jenny occasionally gets to travel abroad with her work, mainly to go to a hearing at one of the European Patent Office patent courts. Recently, she went on a trip to Hamburg in Germany. Jenny knows that there is good progression at each stage of the Patent Attorney career ladder. You can move from Trainee, to Qualified Attorney and then Senior Attorney and finally to Partner. In the future, Jenny hopes to be a qualified Patent Attorney and maybe she will become a Partner one day too!"
