About Dr Ozak...

Who am I?

"Ozak is an Electrical Engineer, designing and supervising the installation of electrical services in new buildings and renovations.Ozak demonstrates the ‘Quality Controller’ type because there are a lot of regulations in her job and she needs to be organised and empathic to make sure they are followed and to keep everyone safe. Her role is collaborative, so she also needs to be approachable and efficient at communicating her thoughts, ideas and opinions to everyone within her team; this ties in with the ‘Trainer’ and ‘Coach’ types."

What do I do?

"Ozak designs electrical services for buildings. These can include the lighting, data, power, fire alarms, and security and access control systems for a wide range of structures from offices, to hospitals, arts centres and colleges. She uses a wide range of software and ensures all her designs comply with electrical standards and regulations. She produces technical drawings of her proposed designs and writes accompanying specifications detailing how she wants systems to be installed by the contractors and builders on site. On a typical day, she will work on designing services using 3D software on her computer in the office and discuss with her colleagues and members of her team how they will deliver a particular project. She also attends meetings on site with the client and the external design team (architects, surveyors, project managers etc). She really enjoys the variety of projects that she gets involved in. She also supervises the installation of the systems on site, making sure that the contractor is delivering as per her intended design. She loves being recognised for her achievements through winning awards."

How did I get here?

"Ozak grew up in Nigeria. The challenging living conditions inspired her to become an electrical engineer. She knew that not everywhere in the world experienced the challenges she did as a kid and she was determined to learn from those parts of the world and implement something similar in her own country. Had she been in the UK, Ozak would consider doing an apprenticeship to get into Electrical Engineering, but this route was unheard of in Nigeria. Instead, she took the university route and did a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Ozak’s starting salary was between £22,000 – £24,000."

The life I live

"In her spare time, Ozak likes watching TV, dancing and cooking. She also loves to travel, and she has loads of chances to do this in her job, not just locally but also internationally. She recently got to travel to Nigeria for a project. Ozak also has opportunities for progression available to her. She sees herself one day owning a power distribution company in Nigeria, supplying sustainable energy to local communities across the country, boosting shared prosperity and contributing towards ending energy poverty."
