About Chloe...
Who am I?
"Chloe is a Combat Systems Engineer working on the designs of naval weaponsof naval ships and defence systems.Chloe is a considerate, honest and friendly individual – key attributes when much of her role involves working on projects with customers. The ‘Innovator’ personality type is suited to Chloe’s job as a Design and Development Engineer, where she has to understand what the customers want and think of ideas to solve any problems. Chloe is also logical and good at problem solving, this is reflected by the ‘Developer’ side of her personality where she thinks practically and creatively to get the customer a feasible solution. Naturally, the characteristics of Chloe’s personality make her a very good communicator – she is very good at understanding her audience and tailoring work to that level, emphasising another key aspect of her personality. "
What do I do?
"Chloe works for an defence and security company in their engineering area. Chloe is a Combat Systems Engineer working on the designs of naval ships and defence systems. Her work falls mainly into two categories. Firstly, Chloe works on the designs for submarine and ship combat systems, this includes weapons, communications, sensors, and navigation. This may be in-house designs, or it could be developing bespoke designs for customers. Secondly, Chloe works with the company’s customers, supporting them when they need any engineering, technical or managerial information or advice. A typical day may involve research and development work, writing a paper on sonar systems or developing ship’s communication systems. Chloe may also be creating documents for her clients or meeting them at their office to discuss the next few months of deadlines. Both Chloe’s day and the projects she works on are varied – and that’s what she loves! She says that she does a lot of exciting things in her work now and when she was an Electromagnetic Signature Analyst trialling the magnetic systems on warships."
How did I get here?
"Chloe was inspired by seeing lots of women with exciting Physics and Science careers at a STEM event when she studied her A levels. At University, Chloe studied Physics. She then went to take a Science-based role in the Defence Industry. This job gave her a lot of defence/ naval experience in conjunction with developing her engineering aptitude. From this role she utilised her experience to apply to a consultancy type role where she would use her physics and engineering skills to help customers on their projects. Chloe always enjoyed Maths and Science and knew that a Physics degree fed your analytical and technical skills. She always wanted an interesting job that made a difference – she has found that working with the Ministry of Defence as a major customer has helped fulfilled that. "
The life I live
"Outside of work Chloe manages to keep herself active by doing dance, running and yoga – she really enjoys these activities and feels it helps contribute to a healthy mind and body. In the future, Chloe sees herself moving up within her current department where she is hoping to see opportunities arise. Interestingly, Chloe had never considered working in the Defence industry until she saw a job opening that wanted a physicist. Chloe believes there are always so many great jobs out there that we do not know about – develop the skill areas that you thrive in and see what happens. "
