Berenice Mann
Education teaches you to think critically, learn, and apply your knowledge to other areas. Having a science background is really useful for all sorts of roles, not just science.
About Berenice...
Who am I?
"Berenice describes herself as creative and inventive, and the ‘Communicator’ and ‘Developer’ types fit her role perfectly, as she needs to develop methods and communications that will promote and advance the products that her company designs. Berenice has always enjoyed creative writing and uses this to communicate technical information in a creative way. She works with a team and also with other departments and external organisations and her ‘Manager’ type offers her useful skills to work with to develop others. "
What do I do?
"Berenice is a marketing manager for a company that designs and licences billions of microchips for use in mobile devices all over the world. She is a marketer for a highly technical team and needs both technical skills and communication skills to fulfil her role. She describes herself as a science communicator.Berenice needs to be able to fully understand the technical side of the products and to be able to communicate that information to potential clients, and the industry globally, telling people about the products, how they can be used in a range of applications, and the benefits these products can bring. She likes creating communications for the ‘outside world’ and seeing her work ‘out there’. Berenice is involved in lots of projects and technologies at Arm, from the Internet of Things Security Platform to their Server innovations. She works as part of a team, and with other departments in the company. She particularly likes projects that she sees grow from the start and that become part of the ecosystem. Berenice loves launching new products, and has done so in two joint ventures. She also enjoys having the opportunity to travel to other global offices and to attend conferences."
How did I get here?
"Berenice was supported towards a science career by her father and her teachers, and she was also supported with her creative writing which she enjoyed. She was a good all-rounder, but particularly loved science. She took a degree and followed this with a PhD, studying Physics – Optics and Combustion Diagnostics. Berenice says there are more subject options now and she would have taken an engineering and communications route if she could choose again. She says it is not necessary to study a specific marketing subject as you can always add that to your skills later. Berenice is also a chartered Marketeer. Berenice lived in Australia for 3 years as a research scientist following her PhD! After a career break to have her family, Berenice worked as a technical project manager but then decided to set up her own business so she could have a better work/life balance. She then returned to corporate work once her children were older, and says that she enjoys the structure and working conditions at Arm. The starting salary for a Marketing Assistant ranges from £18-21k. The salary for a Senior Marketing Manager can range from £40-65k depending on the size of the company, region and any specialisms."
The life I live
"Berenice enjoys reading and photography, and likes archaeology and history. She has 3 children, and her 2 daughters are into musical theatre, which means she is now too! She writes reviews, chaperones children and has even taken part in productions! She has her own review website and reviews restaurants too. She is also something of an adventurer, she used to have flying lessons, and she once bungee-jumped 43 meters over a river in New Zealand!Berenice’s helped her previous company win 2 Queens Awards for Innovation, which she is very proud of. In the future, she sees herself moving up to a more senior role in the area she is in at present, but she does have a yearning to work in something related to the health and medical sector."
