Mechanical Engineer at Cavendish Nuclear
Ignore people who tell you it is ‘unusual’ or you're going into a ‘male-dominated environment’ - it really doesn't matter!
About Eisha...
Who am I?
"I am a Mechanical Engineer at Cavendish Nuclear, a leading UK supplier to the nuclear industry. I am friendly, practical and creative. I demonstrate the ‘Explorer’ type as I have to research solutions to engineering problems, or compare similar problems, and the solutions. I also match well with the ‘Developer’ type as I often have to come up with creative solutions whenever the most ‘obvious’ solution can't be used due to space, cost or customer constraints. I am the ‘Trainer’ type as I need to explain my ideas clearly in Concept and Design Reviews or to other teams such as Human Factors and Stress to ensure a viable solution is produced. "
What do I do?
"I am a Mechanical Engineer in a large specialist nuclear services organisation. The company works with nuclear sites across the UK, delivering nuclear power and waste treatment facilities, from building plants and maintaining them, through to decommissioning them. I design solutions to mechanical engineering problems on nuclear sites. These could be structural engineering problems, ways to assemble or dismantle components, resolving something that is not working correctly, or designing a mechanism to help other engineers – every day is different. i am lucky enough to work in an environment where people are really supportive and trust me enough to give me a package of work that I can own. This means I get given the resource to help me develop the ideas I see as being most appropriate and then present them at a meeting for peer review."
How did I get here?
"I was inspired by my Grandad who is a Civil Engineer. Before going to university, I worked full time for 18 months as a robotics engineer in a bespoke robotics company. I then decided to do an undergraduate MEng in Mechanical Engineering, where the first 2 years of the course involved studying General Engineering. I ended up dropping out of university due to ill health and then worked full time in engineering. I eventually decided to return to university, and during my 4th year I applied to Graduate Schemes. Doing a Graduate Scheme has allowed me to move around different departments and find where I best fit in. The benefit of having an MEng degree is that it can be easier to get Chartered than starting from scratch. My starting salary was £27,500."
The life I live
"In my spare time, I love to bake and cook a lot. I also play squash, Ultimate Frisbee and goes to the gym. I also like to paint, knit and cross-stitch when find the time. The Graduate Scheme that I'm on is designed to help you progress along whichever route you choose. In the future I hope to still be in technical focussed work within the nuclear industry."
My typical day
"I work mostly at my desk or am in meetings. I can be writing reports, producing calculations or modelling up items using Computer Aided Design software. The most exciting part of my career so far was hosting a Concept Review where everyone discussed the options that she I produced. They then chose a Concept and I am now working towards getting it manufactured."
My qualifications
"A-Levels: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, ChemistryMechanical Engineering Masters Degree (MEng)"
