About Roshni...
Who am I?
"Roshni is a Research Associate at a university.Roshni describes herself as curious and creative, and is an ‘Explorer’ type, these are great matches for a researcher. Her ability to be organised and self-motivated means that she is able to get the most out of her work. Her research is helping to change how people source energy, and fits well with the ‘Campaigner’ type. Roshni also teaches students about her research and the environmental topics in general, which enables them to learn and research for themselves, so the ‘Trainer’ type is a good match for her."
What do I do?
"Roshni is a Research Associate at Birmingham University. She carries out scientific research into biomass energy, which is energy from utilising organic materials. She researches obtaining energy from food waste and sewage sludge, as well as other organic materials like algae. Her work looks at energy plants and how to get the most out of the biomass fuel sources. Biomass is a renewable energy source and her work will have a positive environmental impact. She says working in the lab is exciting (and colourful), and she particularly likes working with seaweed as it is a living biomass. She also enjoys interacting with industrial partners through her work.As well as carrying out laboratory-based research, Roshni writes articles for journals and presents at conferences, and she also teaches students on mechanical engineering courses about biomass energy and environmental topics. "
How did I get here?
"Roshni has always found engineering captivating with its innovative technologies, and she was inspired by the likes of scientists such as Marie Curie and those who she met during her educational journey like her PhD supervisor Prof. Lynsey Melville. Roshni completed her degree in Chemistry and is completing her PhD in Biochemical Engineering, where she focused on bioenergy and biofuels. She also has a master’s degree in Education which is really useful for the teaching part of her role. She could progress to be a lecturer, or even a professor in the future."
The life I live
"In her spare time, Roshni likes water colour painting, reading and baking, especially chocolate brownies! She is also a blogger.Roshni enjoys travelling and she gets to travel and present her work at conferences all over the world. She stayed in Disneyland Paris once whilst delivering a paper, and another time whilst in Beijing, she could explore the Great Wall of China!"
