About Sian...

Who am I?

"Sian is the Head of Materials and Analytical Science at a company that researches and develops nuclear weapons. To do her job, Sian needs to work with lots of different people to solve problems logically, but at the same time creatively coming up with new ideas. She is naturally inquisitive and has always enjoyed finding out about new things, she matches really well with the ‘Developer’, ‘Investigator’ and ‘Explorer’ types."

What do I do?

"Sian is the Head of Materials and Analytical Science at a company that researches and develops nuclear weapons.Sian looks after a large team of scientists who carry out research to better understand different materials. She takes lots of measurements which she can analyse to check that what they are making is of the right quality and is safe. She particularly enjoys coming up with an idea for something new and then proving it can work. Sian used to work in a laboratory but has now progressed and most of her time is spent talking with her team of 450 people and helping them to solve problems."

How did I get here?

"Sian has been inspired by her mum who worked in a laboratory. They used to do a lot of fun kitchen experiments together at home! Sian went on to do a degree in Chemistry and spent lots of time working in a laboratory and moving around different teams to keep learning new things. The starting salary for a chemist working in a laboratory nowadays is about £20,000."

The life I live

"Sian enjoys spending time with her family and keeping fit. She is quite adventurous and has even done a parachute jump and trained as a scuba diver! Sian really loves her job and she thinks it would be great if she could progress even further, but if not, she would be content continuing in this role. She personally plans to use her position to encourage more people to do STEM careers."
