Who am I?
"Kamini is a Quality Manager and Senior Biomedical Scientist for in the Department of Immunology at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.She works with a team of people and supports them to carry out their roles. She is organised and efficient which are important skills for this. Her ‘Communicator’ and ‘Trainer’ types match with this role where she needs to direct, support and develop her team. Kamini is effective in this as she is eloquent and empathetic. Kamini enjoys her work, both the investigations and working out how to test for diseases. This is a good match for her ‘Innovator’ type."
What do I do?
"Kamini is a Quality Manager and Senior Biomedical Scientist in a busy Immunology laboratory. The Immunology laboratory helps to diagnose the diseases patients are suffering from, as well as studying what is causing the problems, and researching ways to prevent or reduce the effects of immune disorders. They support doctors and medical teams to treat, manage and monitor patients’ disease.Kamini manages the Immunology team, supporting them to do their work and monitoring their activities to make sure that all the work is carried out to high standards. As part of her role, Kamini supports her team with their workflow, investigates failed tests and finds solutions, carries out audits and training, works with other teams, and represents her department at meetings. She has the opportunity to travel, attending conferences and meeting suppliers. She has travelled to Italy, Birmingham and Sheffield for conferences.Kamini often uses tests that are ready-made, but she says one of the most exciting parts of her work was when she developed a test to diagnose a particular disease herself."
How did I get here?
"Kamini grew up watching science documentaries and was inspired by scientists like Professor Robert Winston.She completed her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science and then took up a role as Trainee Biomedical Scientist at The Royal Free Hospital, London. Kamini then registered as a Biomedical Scientist and progressed from a Junior to Senior Biomedical Scientist before taking up her present management position. She completed a Master’s degree in Medical Immunology while she was working, which was part-funded by her employer. Biomedical scientists earn from £22,000 to £40,000 to even more per year!"
The life I live
"Kamini enjoys being outdoors, going to activity centres and taking part in lots of health and fitness activities. She also likes to watch movies and read books.Kamini is a volunteer radio presenter for Radio Cherwell, Oxford University Hospital’s charity radio station. She presents ‘The Weekend for Everything Show’ for children on Saturday mornings! After the show, she goes onto the wards and speaks to patients!In the future, Kamini would like to lead the Immunology service and inspire girls to pursue this career and become the next generation of Healthcare Scientists."
