About Rebecca...
Who am I?
"Rebecca is a mechanical engineer in military research and development. With her curious personality, Rebecca is suited to her role in military research and development. This fits well with her preferred personality types of ‘Explorer’ and ‘Investigator’ as much of research and development is about exploring and trialling new technologies. Rebecca is also reliable and outgoing which is important when she works in a close-knit team. Within Rebecca’s workplace, and her role, it is important that she supports her colleagues so that they can work together effectively to find solutions, Rebecca fits well will with the ‘Coach’ type. "
What do I do?
"Rebecca works for a national defence company, she is a Mechanical Engineer in the area of military research and development. Rebecca’s job is highly variable. Technology and equipment are constantly changing and developing, especially in the area of nuclear threat and terrorism. She needs to be up to date and able to apply new knowledge and ideas. The majority of her job will consist of design work, manufacturing, technical report writing, trials and systems integration for defence systems. Rebecca loves the variety and challenge of the work and the fact that she is not trapped behind a desk. Whilst she works in a small team, the company is large and there are lots of opportunities for progression. One of the most exciting parts of Rebecca’s career to date, is going on secondment to the Foreign Office in London. This experience helped her to focus on the skills that she was weakest at to help her improve for the future. As part of Rebecca’s work, she has the opportunity to travel both within the UK and abroad – this can include visiting military sites, trials facilities of visiting manufacturers. Rebecca’s starting salary was £22,500."
How did I get here?
"When Rebecca finished her masters’ degree in Mechanical Engineering she joined the AWE graduate programme. This scheme involved several rotations around the company where she experienced working in a variety of teams. Whilst Rebecca knew she wanted to be a Mechanical Engineer she had no idea what area to work in – as there are so many options! A graduate scheme which offers the chance to trial placements helps you to explore options. Rebecca realised from this that she liked the design aspect of mechanical engineering and that’s where she is presently working. She also says to research what A levels to do based on what subject you want to study at University."
The life I live
"In Rebecca’s spare time she loves to rock climb – both indoors and outdoors. In addition to this, she keeps herself active by completing obstacle course races and going to the gym. Aside from fitness, Rebecca enjoys playing computer games. In addition to all of this, Rebecca has appeared on the Channel 4 Series ‘Escape’ which was aired in October 2017! Rebecca sees herself staying as a Technical Engineer in the future as she feels it is best suited to her. One day, she hopes to become a subject matter expert. "
