My A-Level Maths teacher inspired me as she never underestimated me and always pushed me to achieve. She encouraged me to be persistent, and never made me question whether or not I could excel at STEM subjects.
About Rebecca...
Who am I?
"Rebecca is a Research Engineer, and her main role is as project manager for the development of waste heat recovery technology. In Rebecca’s capacity as a project manager, she leads a multi-disciplined team to a common goal, which really suits her as the ‘Innovator’ type. She describes herself as persuasive and collaborative, which makes her a natural leader. She is also good at combining empathy, teamwork and financial awareness, which are all necessary to run a project successfully. Being both the ‘Trainer’ and ‘Coach’ type, Rebecca is quick to help individuals within the team to grow, especially those new to the team. As the ‘Campaigner’ type, Rebecca has imaginative ideas and understands what people want, so she can persuade people and bring them along on the journey to a common goal."
What do I do?
"Rebecca is a Research Engineer, and her main role is as project manager of the development of waste heat recovery technology (taking heat energy that would have been exhausted into the atmosphere and making use of it). This is important as a way to reduce global warming, and to improve sustainability, as well as reducing manufacturing costs. The technology that Rebecca works with takes waste heat from industrial processes and transforms it into electricity which is more useful to customers. Rebecca takes the lead on this, which means reviewing models, specifying components, and generating strategies for how the technology should function. In her project manager role, Rebecca plans how each project will run and reviews how money is spent. She controls the risk of the project and manages any issues that arise. She also reports to the EU Commission, who provide funding for her projects, by writing reports and giving presentations to industry experts. A typical day for Rebecca involves reviewing project progress, collaborating with her team and liaising with external partners. At the moment, they are transitioning from design phase to manufacturing phase, so are reviewing and agreeing on final designs, as well as getting quotes for the build. At this point she mainly works in an office environment, but once the technology is built she'll be completing an extensive test program in the test facilities and doing more practical engineering. The highlight of Rebecca’s career has been a 6-month placement working in a manufacturing facility in America, where she was responsible for making cost savings in the production of products. "
How did I get here?
"Rebecca did a Master’s in Mathematics with Engineering where she developed technical and analytical skills which she uses in her current role. She then joined a graduate scheme at Spirax Sarco, where she was able to experience different roles within the company. Her starting salary was £27,000. From there she got her current role as Research Engineer in Spirax Sarco's Steam Business Development function. Since then she has enrolled on a second Master’s in Building Services Engineering with Sustainable Energy through distance learning in her spare time. Her company are sponsoring her tuition fees. Rebecca has found that there are many routes to obtaining a role as a Research Engineer. She can see that a passion for learning, persistence and determination to achieve in STEM subjects has supported her and her colleagues to get into these roles"
The life I live
"Rebecca is a sociable person and likes to spend time with family and friends, especially going for walks in the countryside with her dogs. She is also training for a half marathon. She likes to get creative and enjoys crafting, making scrapbooks, and photography. In the future, Rebecca would like to progress to a Senior Research Engineer role, taking on more responsibility in the Research process, and helping to develop engineers earlier on in their careers. In the long run she would love the challenge of reaching a Director level role. Rebecca loves to travel both in and outside of the UK and she would love to work abroad again in the future. She is hoping to have visited every continent one day!"
