About Victoria...

Who am I?

"I lecture in Biomedical Science at a university. I teach my students to examine samples in a laboratory and figure out what is wrong with them.As a Lecturer, I fit really well with the ‘Trainer’ type. This requires me to have excellent empathic skills and I really love working with students and developing their knowledge and skills. I also need to be self-motivated and organised to prepare everything I need for my lectures and to make sure my students get training with suitable placement providers and make progress. This fits in with being the ‘Quality Controller’ type."

What do I do?

"I lecture students in Biomedical Science and supervise their progress while they are on placement in NHS laboratories. I teach my students to examine biomedical samples in a laboratory and figure out what is happening with them. This can help them to diagnose illnesses or to see if treatments are having an effect so they can apply this in their future medical or research roles. When I arrive at my office each day, I first check what teaching I have on for the day and get together any 'props' that I might need for my lectures as I always try to include a lot of activities. I then answer any emails and look at any prep work I may have to do for the next week, such as reviewing lectures. After that I will go to my lectures or maybe a lab practical and in the afternoon, and then I will visit NHS placement providers to discuss laboratory training for my students."

How did I get here?

"I originally studied Biomedical Science at university. I then worked as a Biomedical Scientist in an NHS laboratory. I did this for almost 25 years and progressed as far as being a training manager. After that I decided to move into academia and have studied for an MSc and a PhD. In fact, Sir David Attenborough presented me with my MSc certificate! I then took on my current role as a lecturer, sharing all my experience with my students. The starting salary for a Biomedical Scientist is about £28,000 and for a Lecturer is about £43,000. "

The life I live

"In her spare time, Victoria enjoys reading, walking and gaming. She loves spending time with her family in general! There are very good opportunities for progression in Victoria’s job and she would really like to progress all the way to the role of Professor one day."

My typical day

"During term my time is spent divided between delivering lecture, tutorials and practicals along side spending time at my computer replying to emails. Outside of term time there is still computer work to do, along with marking assessments and visiting students at their placements."

My qualifications

"My Qualifications;A-levels; Biology, Chemistry, PhysicsBSc(Hons) in Clinical Biomedical ScienceMSc in Biomedical ScienceProfessional Doctorate in Biomedical ScienceNVQ Level 5 in Leadership and ManagementPost Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher EducationAfter GCSE's I chose to do science A-levels, and then went on to do a part-time degree in Biomedical Science which allowed me to undertake my clinical training alongside my academic studies to become a registered biomedical scientist.Following registration I undertook an MSc in Biomedical Science and then a professional doctorate to enhance my specialist knowledge and skills. To support the other elements of my role as a training manager in the laboratory I chose to do an NVQ in leadership and management.Following my move from clinical practice to academia I undertook a teaching qualification."
