About Orla...

Who am I?

"Orla is the Engineering Quality Transformation Manager for a luxury car manufacturer, making sure any quality issues within the company are fixed as soon as possible.Orla is an efficient, inventive and resourceful individual, which is a perfect fit with her current role dealing with any quality issues with the cars and finding solutions. This demonstrates the ‘Innovator’ and ‘Investigator’ side of her personality as she likes to use her mind to think about the best way to solve a problem – investigating and evaluating various different strategies. In addition to this, Orla is very interested in supporting and coaching others which is why she has done extra training alongside her job in these areas, emphasising how she fits well with the ‘Trainer’ personality type. "

What do I do?

"As an Engineering Quality Transformation Manager for a car manufacturer, Orla works to improve how her company deals with quality issues or problems in their cars so that problems can be fixed as quickly as possible. Orla does not always look at the individual problem, but instead she will focus on how the whole business manages quality. She manages systems and processes so that they produce a quality product every time. Car manufacturing is highly automated, using computers and robotics - Orla could be looking at measuring systems, process plans, dealing with complaints, or looking at ways to make the business more efficient.Orla works in an office and will frequently have meetings with a huge range of people. She uses internal systems for looking at customer projects and complaints before working on projects to bring about improvements to the business. Orla loves learning new things and the variety that each day brings. She doesn’t travel a lot with work but spent 2 months with work in America, she says some engineers have road tested vehicles in the Artic Circle and Iceland!Orla’s favourite part of her career to date is working on the new Range Rover Velar. As part of the launch of the vehicle Orla featured in a behind the scenes video! "

How did I get here?

"The leading female physicist Marie Curie was a key inspiration for Orla, helping her to consider science which then led to her choosing a career in Engineering. Orla completed her degree in Engineering, obtaining an MEng from the University of Glasgow. She then completed a MSc part time through work, which took a further four years. During this time, she did work experience with BT and Jaguar Land Rover. Orla then completed the Jaguar Landrover graduate engineer scheme working in audio, then as problem solving engineer, her starting salary was £29,000. Since then, Orla has progressed quite quickly to her current role as manager in the Product Engineering Quality team. "

The life I live

"Outside of work, Orla plays music – the viola. She is a member of Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to this, Orla does yoga – although admits that she is not that flexible. Interestingly, Orla did not always want to be an engineer. She loves science but was unsure on what road to go down. It was only when she was 17 that she thought about doing Engineering at University as she felt that it was the best fit for her. Now, Orla aspires to be a leader in engineering with the prospects of having a big team and a dynamic and challenging project to run. "
