Lowri Evans
I enjoy meeting people from across a number of industries and places around the UK. Our experiences shape us so much as people, that everyone is so truly different.
About Lowri...
Who am I?
"Lowri’s job as a Carbon Psychologist is to persuade people and companies to work and behave in way that uses less energy and is more environmentally friendly. Her work is improving our environment.Being an ‘Explorer’ and ‘Investigator’ is key to Lowri’s job role as she has to investigate a lot of information and work out useful patterns in the information. Lowri is efficient and creative, and this helps her when looking at all the information and on deciding how to make improvements. Lowri’s work is focused on people and their behaviours, and so being a ‘Coach’ means people are able to see her helping them."
What do I do?
"As a Carbon Psychologist, Lowri helps people and companies reduce their energy use. Carbon is a fossil fuel and it is running out, so this work is very important for future generations.Lowri uses the scientific principles of psychology and behavioural economics to understand people’s behaviour around energy consumption. She asks, “Why do people behave the way they do, and how can we change their behaviour to make them more energy efficient?” Lowri says it is like solving a big puzzle!Lowri visits businesses all across the UK and carries out research to find out how much energy they use, the ways in which they use energy, and why they use it. She looks at better ways for them to work, or to carry out every-day processes to reduce their energy usage. She has even visited a biscuit factory, and watched humongous batches of cookie dough swirling round! To make a change, businesses could just turn lights out or turn heating down, or they may need to invest in more modern manufacturing equipment that uses less energy. Lowri needs to be able to explain why this is important and she may need to convince them to invest in new processes. "
How did I get here?
"At university, Lowri completed an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Cognitive Psychology and Neuropsychology – studying the mind and how it works. She then began work as an Applied Psychologist designing behavioural change programmes. As she developed her methods and her approach, she moved into field-based work (going into industry rather than working in her office) to experience these changes where they were being applied. Now, as the Low Carbon and Behaviour Change Manger she can take the lead on these projects. Her starting salary was £25,000 per year.A key inspiration for Lowri was Amelia Earheart, the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. Lowri believes that Amelia carved out a place in history by doing what was then thought to be impossible in a very male-dominated field at that time. "
The life I live
"Outside of work, Lowri loves spending time with her dog Rufus – a bearded collie. They are both adventurous, so enjoy climbing mountains, canoeing, kayaking and hiking together! Lowri also has musical streak and is a member of a few bands where she plays the saxophone. Currently, a lot of Lowri’s spare time is occupied with renovating her new house. She spends the majority of her evenings covered in dust! An interesting fact about Lowri is that she holds a Queen’s Commission in the Army Reserve at the rank of Lieutenant. "
