About Catherine...

Who am I?

"Catherine is a safety engineer, she makes sure that everyone is safe in the nuclear plants she helps to build, operate and decommission.Catherine is a resourceful and curious person who loves science, which stems from her desire to learn and understand things. Having a career in engineering has allowed her to pursue her love of science and satisfied her desire to learn, question and solve complex problems. She demonstrates the ‘Communicator’ and ‘Coach’ types by working with and helping others. Her role allows her to look at and solve engineering and safety related issues and deliver and communicate the solution to her clients. She must also ensure her clients work to regulations and standards, which fits with the ‘Influencer’ type."

What do I do?

"As a Safety Engineer, Catherine’s role involves helping clients to build, operate and decommission (dismantle safely) nuclear plants, ensuring that safety requirements have been met, while also ensuring cost effectiveness. The nuclear power industry is important to ensure that the UK has the energy it needs, but it is critical that the plant is safe for those working in it and for the community local to it.Her industry is an exciting and dynamic one, issues and challenges constantly arise and must be solved. With her job, Catherine has been offshore and has travelled for workshops across the UK and Ireland. Some of her colleagues have travelled for trips to Japan and have even moved to live in the United Arab Emirates for a long-term secondment."

How did I get here?

"She was motivated to learn and do well in her degree as she is a conscientious person who thrives on doing well and learning new things. She has been inspired by her parents who encouraged her to be confident in her views and ideas. Growing up, they gave her exposure to the world of science through work experience days and even doing fun experiments at home! They supported her through school and helped her to find a degree and a career she’d enjoy and could excel in. Catherine’s starting salary in her career was £33,000."

The life I live

"Catherine enjoys dancing and singing and has been part of a musical theatre group and an all-female choir. She also enjoys skiing, surfing, hiking and cycling when she can.Although Catherine tries to be confident, she admits that she is constantly convinced she has only got this far by luck, despite regularly getting excellent grades and positive feedback. She is only now beginning to give herself credit for all her achievements. In the future, she could see herself in a leadership role, whether this be leading teams or business development or technical leadership. She knows her career path will continue to open doors to let her follow her paths!"

My typical day

"For Catherine, no two days are the same. She completes safety assessments and calculations, writes reports and communicates with clients to understand their issues and how she can help. The kinds of projects she works on mean she is always learning new things and has new problems to solve."
