Penny Hindle
Software Developer at X-lab Systems
I enjoy having a real impact on the organisation I work for, as well as the wider industry. Since I work in a small company, the environment is friendly, flexible and fast-paced.
About Penny...
Who am I?
"Penny feels that ‘Trainer and ‘Campaigner’ are good descriptions of her and fit with her role as she shows people how to use software and encourages them to get the most from the product. Penny is a logical and creative individual, skills that are highly suited to this role. Her efficiency and organisation skills are important in a job where she is balancing multiple projects at once. They are also really important skills to support her as she completes her Computer Science degree. In addition to this, Penny is a self-reliant individual, reflected through taking on this placement as a Deployment Coordinator where she often has to chair meetings and do teleconference calls with customers. Penny wanted to gain real world experience alongside her degree and build her confidence within the world of work. This placement has helped her to do that."
What do I do?
"X-lab produces software for the healthcare science sector, to help researchers and medical experts do their jobs.Penny’s role as Deployment Coordinator involves managing different projects and communicating with customers to make sure they have the product they ordered, that the software works and that it meets their needs. For example, when a new customer purchases the company’s software, Penny is responsible for helping them establish a connection and testing the system thoroughly. During her time at X-Lab Systems, Penny has had the opportunity to travel to different customer sites to hold meetings and recently she flew to France for a meeting! "
How did I get here?
"Currently, Penny is studying Computer Science at university and has opted to do a year in industry at X-lab systems to gain life experience and add to her skillset. Alongside Penny’s current role as Deployment Coordinator, she has been doing some work as a website developer, giving herself an opportunity to widen her skill set and provide an alternative route for her future. Penny has been inspired by other female role models in technology fields, and they were her motivation to study in this area. She says you can work in this area even if you do not choose to do a degree, there are lots of opportunities and a lot of technology that you can teach yourself."
The life I live
"In her spare time, Penny loves learning how to code and keep up to date with the latest technology news. There are always new and exciting innovations in technology.Penny is now a role model herself. Her company allows her time off to visit schools, and she showed the ‘Trainer’ type part of her personality recently when she used CodeFit to help a class of girls to increase their computer skills and learn HTML and CSS. A lot of Penny’s spare time is spent using technology – she spends a lot of time on social media, especially Instagram! "
