About Kayenat...

Who am I?

"I am a Transport Planner, who designs and develops road systems that help people to travel from place to place quickly and safely.I investigate how road systems work, and think about how they might need to change in future. I develop solutions for transport networks. The ‘Investigator’ and ‘Developer’ types fit perfectly with my job role, as a curious and creative person, I am able to come up with new and practical solutions. I am a conscientious person and a ‘Quality Controller’ type which is really important for a role where safety is critical and people are relying on me to keep them safe."

What do I do?

"As a Transport Planner, I look at how people need to transport themselves and their products, and provides solutions to make it easier and safer for them. I was paid £20,000 per year when I started as an undergraduate transport planner during my placement year. Then went onto earning £25,000 as a graduate transport planner. Transport planners can earn from £22,000 to £50,000 per year. The best bit of my job is seeing designs becoming a reality, and then driving on them! "

How did I get here?

"I took Geography, Biology, Psychology and Chemistry at A-Level. I wanted a career that would have an impact on the community and tried out lots of roles in school work placements, such as pharmacy assistant, sports centre assistant and customer service at Heathrow airport.I chose to study Geography at University and did a placement year between 2nd and 3rd year working at WSP. I realised that transport planning has a positive impact on the entire community, spanning the world and affecting every person, and is an exciting job too. I have had opportunity to try out lots of roles in different transport departments at WSP, and am looking forward to progressing in the future. I will have the opportunity to study more, to apply for professional status, and to choose different directions, and I could even become a director. "

The life I live

"I am a keen boxer, and enjoys mixed martial arts. I also love to travel and particularly enjoys weekends away with my family. I want to see more of the world and it’s great that through work I get to go to meetings abroad, even as far away as Australia! I speak five languages (English, traditional Chinese, Urdu, Hindu and Punjabi), as well as having a good knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and Arabic. I was born in Hong Kong and sound a little bit American because I studied at an international school."

My typical day

"I travel to sites anywhere in the UK and use maps, data, and modelling software to develop new junctions, relief roads or smart motorways. I also prepare business cases to persuade councils or government departments to undertake transport development projects. I look at housing projects and work out how people will travel and where they need to get to, so that a road network can be built that will support the housing development."

My qualifications

"Geography, Biology, Psychology and Chemistry at A-LevelGeography Degree"
