About Amy...

Who am I?

"Amy is the CEO and Co-founder of a charity which provides bespoke, hands-on STEM education and training for disadvantaged young people.Amy is the ‘Trainer’, ‘Innovator’ and ‘Coach’ types. She thinks that her personality type fits her work, as she is persistent, self-motivated and must be entrepreneurial to run her business. Amy must be creative and understanding with the challenges that she faces with learners and students and this makes her a good supporter. Amy is an eloquent person which suits the training aspect of her work and helps her to really get her knowledge across. "

What do I do?

"Amy is the CEO and Co-founder of a charity which provides bespoke, hands-on STEM education and training for disadvantaged young people, to encourage them to consider STEM careers and opportunities and to build their confidence and skills.Amy has always wanted to make an impact on people and to change people’s lives through science, which is why she ended up setting up her own charity. In her first year working for herself, Amy made about £21,000 working part time. Her day-to-day work involves a lot of admin, event planning, taking bookings, going to meetings, and meeting clients to put on the best events that she and her colleagues can. Her role can be a lot of fun working with young people and preforming demonstrations and practicals to large audiences and she is really making a difference to the lives of the young people her organisation works with."

How did I get here?

"Amy struggled throughout her education with people that did not believe in her or didn't think women should become scientists. She tried various routes through education, and finally found one that suited her. Amy went to university as a mature student, studied for 2 years and disliked it so left, started her own business, and then went back to university as a distance learner for the last 2 years. She is now finishing her master’s degree and is about to move on to a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry. Though Amy looks healthy, she has a range of complex and life-altering health conditions, which limit her mobility and can cause her to collapse. As a disabled woman in science, Amy wanted to be like Stephen Hawking who showed her that you could achieve anything despite your disabilities. "

The life I live

"As Amy is currently self-employed, she is rarely off the clock altogether, but she does enjoy going to the gym, seeing friends, and gaming. She and her colleagues have travelled to many countries with the work they do. She has just come back from a two-month trip to Portugal.Through her work, Amy has had the opportunity to meet and work alongside royalty and celebrities. In the future, she hopes to see herself as part of a very large international charity that helps many women and young people and gives scholarships to study STEM."
